Rusty Fastback: 1965 Ford Mustang (Inline-6)

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The popular Ford Mustang debuted in the Spring of 1964, but only two body styles were offered at first: the hardtop coupe and the convertible. It wouldn’t be until the Fall of 1964 when full-year 1965 Mustang production got underway that the nifty fastback would join the mix. It would represent 14% of sales that year or about one out of every seven Mustangs that left the assembly line. This example is about as rough as you might find but could be mildly interesting because it has a six-cylinder engine rather than a V8. Located in Rising Sun, Maryland, this forlorn pony car is available here on eBay where just one bid of $8,500 has been cast – and that’s below the seller’s reserve.

We’re told the seller bought this car to help with a future project that apparently will not happen. But we have to wonder what he/she planned to do with it. Sometimes worn-out cars like this are purchased for their VIN or door tags, but this one would identify the car as being an I-6 rather than the more desirable 289 cubic inch V8. We assume the car hasn’t run in several years and it has rusted away from the inside out. The rear sheet metal from the trunk lid down looks as though Cookie Monster put a bite on things.

More than 77,000 out of 559,000 Mustangs produced in full-year 1965 were fastbacks (that excludes the so-called 1964 ½ versions built in the Spring and Summer of 1964). A 200 cubic inch inline-6 is under the hood and a few parts like the radiator are gone. These engines were painted red in 1965 before switching to blue in 1966 (as was the case with my ’66 Mustang I-6).

The seller’s description suggests the top half of the car is solid (aka roof) while the floors, subframe, trunk pan, tail panel, and rear quarters have succumbed to the dreaded rust bug. On the plus side, the glass is good, and the seats may be okay. The color is said to be brown, which may have been the case before a coat of yellow was applied. If you were to complete the auction, what would you do with this pony?

Another car with a fake bid. It might not even be worth $850

No chance of getting any return on this investment, I see 15K just in body work. 3K interior, 2K under hood, 1K for brakes.

The glass is good? Is that hole in the windshield a 1965 Mustang option? Flush twice.

I’m assuming the fastback roof parts are worth $8.500 ? it seems many a coupe is being transformed into a fastback these days , if that’s not the case, then the bid is definitely fake !

This guy is “California Dreaming” if he thinks anyone is STUPID ENOUGH to give him even close to that! All it’s good for is what limited parts that haven’t rusted out yet, and the rest of this pony should be euthanized via scrap yard.

Seller probably gave his neighbor a McDonalds gift card to place a fake bid. You have to be kidding me. Total jiunk here. These are called Rustangs for a reason.

Probably the worst example of a vehicle of this kind ever posted. A few peices of glass might be the only worthwhile parts on this hulk.

Once again, delusional sellers looking for a sucker. You would have to pay me to just take it to a scrap yard. There’s nothing left to restore. I could fabricate a replica for less and it wouldn’t be a headache.

Don’t worry the next bid will magically hit the reserve making some sucker born again.

This looks like a parts car to me. Roof back glass and door glass to make coupe into a fastback. Sell the other bits a piece at a time on Ebay. Is the coupe windshield the same?, or will the fastback builder have to source one?
8500 bucks though, what am I missing?

For a guy to convert a coupe into a fastback it might be worth a $100.00 just to cut the complete roof off for that type of project.

Windshields are 65 to 68 all models. I guess a conversation is possible as all the fastback items appear to be there. The door glass is unique as are all the interior appointments behind the front seat. Shhesh though, 8,500.00 and reserve not met you can buy a V8 stick shift done for 2/3ds of what this would cost and you still have just a 6 cylinder Mustang.

The bullet hole in the windshield is most likely from the local Mustang Club.

$8,600 and the reserve is met. What do know. I think the comments about the first bid being a shill sounds pretty accurate.

Beyond sensible repair. Best bet is take the $8,500 and call it a day.
