I Have a Rusty Porsche: 1976 Porsche 911S Targa

$5,200 won’t buy you much of a Porsche these days, but it will apparently get you a rusty Targa-top model. The seller of this battered 1976 911S is quite forthright that this is not a car intended for road use and has priced it as such: the aforementioned Buy-It-Now or an opening bid of $3,500 with no reserve. That’s downright reasonable in today’s crazy P-Car pricing environment. Find here on eBay with plenty of time in the auction.

Perhaps your New Year’s resolution is to be more daring, or less of a worry-wart. If your goals fit into those buckets or anywhere near those general categories, you could take a chance on this 911, which comes from the later years when emissions got complicated and the bumpers grew bigger. The seller notes that the engine is apart but it comes with a good 5-speed transmission; no word on whether the engine could be re-assembled in its current form.

I know we crow on here frequently about how unrealistic most Porsche sellers are, but this car looks awfully good by those standards. It’s got two good seats, even if they don’t match. The seller says that rust is extensive, but we can only guess it’s in the floors and frame as the exterior photos simply show bad rust in the hood, edges of the fenders and bottoms of the doors. Not great, but not the worst we’ve seen for air-cooled 911s.

The seller says little else about the car, other than he has a clear title in his possession. If the bidding stays below the Buy-It-Now, there’s easily $3K in parts here, and some might even say it’s worth of restoration depending on how bad the rust is that we can’t see. But good glass, interior bits, wheels and a functional manual transmission are all worth having if you’re into old 911s, so hopefully this car will live on in one form or another.

Someone MUST really hate Porsche’s to do this to a car. Or cars in general.

    that’s not a rusty porsche — that’s $25,000 in non-liquid assets.

based on the picture alone there must be structural rust. buy it put it into dry storage and let it appreciate?

It’s really sad that the only way you can get an affordable Porsche is when it’s about to be reclaimed by the Earth! This is why I choose to buy and drive much better cars at much more reasonable prices. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve owned a 928s and it was a great car but it was an electrical nightmare. Much better cars out there than the Porsches for their extremely unreasonable prices anymore. I’ll be the first one to say it, it’s just a Porsche. LOL

“Much better cars out there than the Porsches…”. I sure don’t agree with that statement because without clarification it means little. Perhaps when we’re talking classic air cooled 911s, but then again they could be a good investment over time? But, you’re not going to find much better ‘bang for you buck’ than an old first gen Boxster! Amazing little cars with fantastic performance, cheap to buy and own…except tires ( if you drive aggressively; ). There are reasonable Porsches out there, just not AC 911s!

Let me clarify because you left off the most important part of my statement. I said there are much better cars out there than Porsches for the unreasonable money that they are getting now. My 2005 Nissan 350Z outperforms a Porsche 911 in every way possible and actually is a better car and it didn’t cost me $25,000 for a rusted-out soon to reclaimed by the earth version. I have owned a few Porsches including an 84 911 SC Targa, but with the prices the way they are for Porsches it’s just not worth it anymore for the performance that you get. If you compare the performance to the value you’re getting for your money, Porsches are right now not even worth it. I figured this, everybody loves what they love, no matter if you paid $25,000 for a rusted-out 911 or you paid $100,000 for a mint 930 turbo. You love what you love and price does not matter. My comment was based on the fact that I think with the price that you pay for the car there are a lot better cars out there than just buying the name anymore. Just my opinion..nobody has to agree with me, that’s why we have free speech…lol

They have gone mad. Having said that i do miss mine but would never pay the money for them now. Never thought i would say that but they are ridiculous now.
I haven’t really been a fan on any since the 964 and it went down hill once they merged with VAG.
Nice cars, but rather have an Aston.

Well damn the one time a car is listed close to where I am (I mean really close) i just happen to be working out if town. I would have really liked to take a closer look at this and the other stuff this seller has. Lots of barns and hiding places around Taz Vegas!
