S-Code 390 V8: 1968 Ford Mustang GT

The popular Ford Mustang got its first restyle in 1967. One of the changes was an increase in engine bay size which could accommodate big-block engines. This stellar 1968 edition is a GT fastback with the S-Code 390 cubic inch V8 and a combination of options that might make it a rarer find. Located in Orangevale, California, this Mustang has a rebuilt motor and transmission and is available here on eBay for $49,600. But the reserve has yet to be cracked.

Competition entered the “pony car” field in 1967, but the Ford Mustang would hold its spot as the sales leader into the 1970s. As performance automobile sales were booming, the Mustang got into the act in 1967-68 as the largest V8 available in 1965-66 was a 289. More than 317,000 Mustangs were built in 1968, but we don’t know how many were GT models with the set-up this Ford offers. The seller has a Marti Report and those usually provide production numbers, but this one does  not.

Assembled in January 1968 in San Jose, California, this Mustang had Candy Apple Red paint from the beginning. The seller doesn’t mention whether it’s been redone, but the finish is in mighty fine condition at 76,000 miles. The black “Deluxe Decor” interior also presents well and has been nicely cared for or reworked. The 390 and the C6 automatic transmission have covered only 3,000 miles since they were rebuilt. More recent new parts include air conditioning components, the power steering unit, and a new radiator.

The seller indicates this car has 14 options that might put it into rare territory. That assortment consists of headrests, a tachometer, the GT Equipment Group, power accessories, a fold-down rear seat, and an extended console. This ’68 Mustang looks as nice as they come, though the presentation would be better with landscape rather than portrait photos that limit the amount of the car that gets into the pictures.
