Saleen Tribute? 1981 Ford Mustang Project

This 1981 Ford Mustang project has clearly been hiding out in the seller’s storage unit for some time. The four-eyed ‘Stang also wears numerous Saleen decals, but most of us know they didn’t make a Saleen at this point in the Fox body’s history. In fact, the Mustang is a hodge-podge of parts and upgrades from different eras of the classic Fox body, and it was previously repsrayed GM Arctic White, which has unfortunately begun to perish a bit with rust spots showing up. The Mustang has been in storage since 2004 and is listed here on craigslist with no price listed.

This really is an interesting assortment of styles we have going on here, with the Saleen graphics on the door, the side sill extensions, and the color-matched Ronal wheels that were offered for a short period on the genuine Saleen cars. I persoanlly like where the seller was going with this build, but it’s a shame it has sat for so long. He has acquired lots of desirable parts to finish this four-eyed Stang off in a big way, but it’s going to take some effort to put it back together. The car will come with Koni shocks, a fully welded subframe, and wiring from a 1979 pace car. The glass has all been removed, along with the dash.

Even the taillights were modified, with the Mustang now wearing the rear lenses from a Mercury Capri. The Saleen treatment goes pretty far, all the way down to the decals and the floormats. The seller notes he even has an extra set of silver and gold Saleen decals and the correct centercaps for the wheels. Speaking of the wheels, the Mustang has also been converted to five-lugs. It will also come with a 7.5 rear end with a Ford Motorsports Traction Lock unit with 3.73 ratio. Like I said – a little bit of everything in this forgotten Mustang.

There’s no mention of an actual engine, however, so I’m guessing you’re starting from scratch there. While the 5.0L is the natural choice, you coudl also make the argument that the direction this build is going in demands a higher-performance engine. The Coyote is a natural choice, or perhaps just a hot-rodded 5.0L – I’d love to see one of those with a supercharger on it. The seller notes he will include a black interior, along with two Saleen “style” rear spoilers. It’s clear he was going for a Saleen tribute car when he was neck-deep in this project, and I’d love to see it taken all the way. Would you keep it as a Saleen copy or go in a different direction?

Looks like there some good stuff there. There’s no mention of a motor or transmission. Torn apart a few fox body cars, got a couple of boxes of parts and fasteners to prove it. Getting the wiring in place under the dash can be tough. Asking price may be years of storage, but putting it back together, not for the novice.
