Salvage Shelby: 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s always a shame when a nice car meets an unfortunate end. When the car has lived a short life, it seems that much more of a disappointment. This 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was impacted on the front end. The damage was enough that the car is being sold on a salvage title and it can be found here on eBay with an asking price of $16,749.99. Located in Lyons, Georgia, the car only has 32,561 miles on the odometer. It appears that this car can have another lease on life. Whether that’s fixing what’s here or harvesting the drivetrain for another project, it seems like there is a ton of potential with this one.

Here is the heart of the beast! You are looking at a 550hp supercharged DOHC 5.4L engine with 6-speed manual transmission. The car also features the following performance upgrades: JLT cold air intake, Ford Racing Cobra jet billet throttle body, upper auxiliary blower belt idler kit, Kooks long tube headers, and underdrive crank pulley.

The impact was hard enough to deploy the driver’s airbag. The ad doesn’t say if any other airbags were popped during the impact. If the new owner is going to use the drivetrain for another project, there are plenty of good interior parts to use as well. For example, the bucket seats look like they are in great shape and would be a good addition to any project.

I love the Cobra trunk emblem and S-H-E-L-B-Y lettering on the rear end of these cars. The classic verticle taillights take strong styling cues from their 1960’s and ’70’s cousins. So what do you think will be the fate of this car? Will it be fixed and driven again looking similar to what it did new? Will the drivetrain and parts be used to power another project? What would you do if you had the choice?

Not an uncommon end to these mustangs as they can get out of control quite easily and quickly. There also known for their traction control systems mel functioning with out warning. I’m not a Ford guy so even if I could afford it I wouldn’t want it.

Nice goin’, yutz. I tell ya’, someone buys the nicest ( and therefor, the most expensive) American car you can get today, and messes it up. Front end damage is 99% of the time, the drivers fault. I’ve driven over 3 million miles without an accident or ticket, so I know what I’m talking about.

I’ve owned an ’08, a ’13 and now a ’14 GT500. I have never taken the nannies off and she will still get sideways in second if you’re not paying attention. This is a snake that will bite if provoked, trust me. I love mine and it’s a daily driver! In reference to this one, don’t think it’s worth it, especially with the salvage title. For the cost of repairs + car, you can buy one without the damage history. Plus with the new 700 +hsp GT500 coming next year, expect these to drop in price.

The local drag strip has Mustangs, including GT500’s and GT500kr’s literally crawling all over it every Wednesday night. I’ve never seen one crash. It has more to do with the driver than the car itself.

The salvage title will haunt this car down the road, if these ever become big dollar cars the true collectors won’t go near this one.

sold!! You can fix almost anything- good luck to the new owner,There’s a good reason this one is totaled, and the last guy didn’t fix it, Friend had one like this that was hit in RR; totaled and he bought as salvage. didn’t look bad, but by the time they got into it they realized the damage extended up to the front seat. Buyer beware…

    Cheers

That may be an excellent way to re-purpose the beast and not worry about the ramifications of trying to make it road worthy again. Guess it would depend on the class and restrictions. Regardless, the drive train is awesome and there is alot of parts interchangability over mustang model years.

Not a bad buy for $16k or so. Won’t take much for a good body guy to make that look good as new. It’s good to see the drivers side airbag was the only thing that went off. Easy fix. But clearly this car with 32,000 on the odometer was driven hard. Nonetheless, still a good buy.

Not necessarily. All of my GT500’s have been daily drivers. My ’08 ‘vert had over 50k miles on it when I traded it in on the ’13. My glass roof ’14 has almost 35k miles on her. Get on Rt 95 and set the cruise at 79. I’m 55 though, so I no longer beat the snot out of things I own.

The drivetrain is the only thing worth the money now with a salvage title but if you had a newer model and you wanted to upgrade it this would be the drivetrain to have. If you were to buy the whole drivetrain in separate pieces new it would cost near what the seller is asking. Our 2012 GT/CS with the Coyote motor will come around on you on take off if you kick off the traction control.

Keep in mind the title will always be branded. Banks won’t loan money on a salvage car. Voided warantee and banks won’t loan money on them.

    You can’t un wreck it.

More Mustangs get wrecked at Cars and Coffee than perhaps any other venue 😒

Imagine the 2005 and 6 Ford GT no traction control and Goodyear f1 tires. But it just shows how in a few years we “need” traction control! Snowflakes! Shame on us!

C’mon now, those Duke Boys r what sparked my interest in American Muscle! I was an impressionable young kid (who doesn’t feel so young now as it’s the Dukes of Hazzard 40th Anniversary this year!!) Throw the drivetrain into something like a MX-5/Miata or similar (probably not enough space in a Miata tho)

I have a wholesale parts account at a local Ford dealership. My buddy at the counter told me about a Shelby wrecked on a test drive. Even new stripes for the hood were crazy expensive.

This WAS a very pretty car. Power train is outta sight! Too bad it ended up this way. I know what I’m thinkin’. But, maybe I should just be quiet on that subject. Ad deleted, anyway.

Love the 2011. This is a good dream car for somebody on a budget who is handy. It doesn’t look like a rollover.

If was $5-6K cheaper, I would consider buying it and swapping the drive train into my ’06 GT convert. Or I guess a guy could buy this and find a 2010 or later 6 cyl S-197 coupe and build a street sweeper

I don’t understand why such an expensive car with such an iconic name never got TRULY unique bodywork(especially the TAILITES) like the ’67s-70’s.
I can NOT tell this is a Shelby unless i look at the nameplates!, while I can spot a ’69 all the way at the other end of a supermarket parking lot.
I still say these mustangs are too small, & now they want to make the camaro even smaller too? Both cars’ back seats are useless compared to their late 60’s counterparts.
Imagine a grey on grey ’69 shelby with those mirrors & plastic trim around the OUTSIDE of the side windows – would totally ruin the car!
& that hood vent looks JCWhitney, not factory, even tho it is (same with the vette’s scoops).

Easy fix ,probably not totalled but owner didn’t want car so had ins total it . Could be a rich kid thinkin he’s mario and lost it lol or some old dude not paying attention. Either way itll always be junk as title is marked and its value is only in the engine. And whats it doin on barn finds anyway ? Or is it trash and bash !

Shame , that’s an easy fix , work at a Ford dealership in a body shop an I do take pride in my work. Can’t quite understand how this vehicle is totaled, fishy, as a rule it has to be 80% of value, give or take different ins company’s have their own standards

Hey Jimmy, a car with a salvage title means that it is a Bunch of parts. It is not considered a car motor vehicle it is considered parts only. After you put it together and you turn it back into a running vehicle then you take it down and get it inspected once it passes inspection motor vehicle safety inspection you can now go down and get the title changed over to a rebuilt title or some like to call it a reconditioned title. Now this is for Texas- I am not sure about other states although they may be similar in the process. The tricky part is finding an insurance company that will ensure the vehicle for full coverage again. State Farm was able to win sure mine for the full value. They feel if the car was put back to original condition than it is worth full price again if it was destroyed again. Hope that helps

Thanks John, I was not aware you could do that. I will check my local Missouri DMV laws on salvage titles. You have been a big help and again thank you.
