Same Family 30 Years: 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

“Personal luxury” cars were quite popular in the 1960s, so Chevrolet finally decided to get into the action in 1970. Their entry was the Monte Carlo, which was built on the same platform as the Pontiac Grand Prix but had Chevelle styling cues. It also had one of the longest hoods you’ll ever find on an American car. This beauty has the powerful 402 cubic inch V8 and has been owned by the same family since the late 1990s. Located with a dealer in Copiague, New York, this sweet ride is available here on craigslist for $34,500.

Chevrolet found years of success with the Monte Carlo, particularly the second-generation model from 1973 to 1977. But the first-gen editions from 1970 to 1972 were no slouches either, and they could be both luxury and muscle cars. Chevy offered a Monte Carlo SS with a 454 V8 for a while, but this one has a 330 hp 402 that was marketed as the 400 Turbo-Jet. Production numbers are sometimes sketchy, but estimates are that no more than five percent were so equipped.

This “Monty” looks as sharp as they come. It sports a triple gold appearance, starting with Champagne Gold paint that’s either original or a superb redo. The bucket seat interior is said to be original and presents as first-rate. If the odometer reading is legit, this Chevrolet has traveled less than 30,000 miles in 56 years. Besides the 402 V8, it has a TH-400 automatic transmission. Because of the torque this engine produces, a 12-bolt rear end is attached to the rear wheels.

A couple of repairs may be needed. Cold air doesn’t come out of the factory A/C, and the fuel gauge has quit working. For optimal cruising pleasure, the Chevy comes with a retro-style aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth. This Monte Carlo may be one of the nicest ones left, and the fact that it has a big-block engine should add to the appeal.

Thanks Dixon. Interesting 402 Monte. No power windows or locks, no tach. But a/c and console. Love to take it on a boulevard drive

Let’s see, $29,500 for a rusted out ’71 Cuda that would need at least another $29,500 to make it half-way presentable, or for $34,500 you can buy this beautiful Monte Carlo. Hmmm, tough decision…NOT!

I always liked the 1970 Monte’s and this one has a BBC AND buckets/center console, the price is not far either. The seller being a dealer on Long Island, I would want to look this over carefully.

I’ll bet Chevy didn’t sell many in that color scheme.

And it has a dealer fantasy price.

It was the 70s, not the era of three shades of gray, white or black. So probably more than we think.

This was a very popular color in the late-60’s to early-1970’s. GM had similar shades of metallic blue, green and silver they were all very popular, they looked good then and still do today.

Argueably the nicest design Chevy ever built.

Beautiful looking car. This is my favourite version of the Monte. I hope it goes to a good owner, one who will enjoy it and take care of it.

I had one of these and put a 427 out of a 67 Corvette in it w/turbo 400 w/shift kit and a factory style oil cooler and a 12 bolt 3.90 posi. Mine was orange, no vinyl top and a black bucket interior with console and working ac, she was a real sleeper that run better than any 454 I came across and the Centerline wheels really set off the appearance and the headers and Flomaster mufflers had a nice deep rumbling tone. I really miss that car every summer day it’s not raining.

At that price, A/C and fuel “gage” should work.

Very nice! Agreed that the fuel gauge and tach should work.

This is a very nice car. but a few red flags selling previously for 19k and now up to 34k, plus dealer selling this car would have to be thoroughly checked out, but still to high I believe for this market an ss with a 454 might bring this kind of money. Although clean and desirable the big question – is it Worth it?? there are a lot nicer cars out there at a cheaper price- greed is driving the price of this car….
