“Personal luxury” cars were quite popular in the 1960s, so Chevrolet finally decided to get into the action in 1970. Their entry was the Monte Carlo, which was built on the same platform as the Pontiac Grand Prix but had Chevelle styling cues. It also had one of the longest hoods you’ll ever find on an American car. This beauty has the powerful 402 cubic inch V8 and has been owned by the same family since the late 1990s. Located with a dealer in Copiague, New York, this sweet ride is available here on craigslist for $34,500.

Chevrolet found years of success with the Monte Carlo, particularly the second-generation model from 1973 to 1977. But the first-gen editions from 1970 to 1972 were no slouches either, and they could be both luxury and muscle cars. Chevy offered a Monte Carlo SS with a 454 V8 for a while, but this one has a 330 hp 402 that was marketed as the 400 Turbo-Jet. Production numbers are sometimes sketchy, but estimates are that no more than five percent were so equipped.

This “Monty” looks as sharp as they come. It sports a triple gold appearance, starting with Champagne Gold paint that’s either original or a superb redo. The bucket seat interior is said to be original and presents as first-rate. If the odometer reading is legit, this Chevrolet has traveled less than 30,000 miles in 56 years. Besides the 402 V8, it has a TH-400 automatic transmission. Because of the torque this engine produces, a 12-bolt rear end is attached to the rear wheels.

A couple of repairs may be needed. Cold air doesn’t come out of the factory A/C, and the fuel gauge has quit working. For optimal cruising pleasure, the Chevy comes with a retro-style aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth. This Monte Carlo may be one of the nicest ones left, and the fact that it has a big-block engine should add to the appeal.

Thanks Dixon. Interesting 402 Monte. No power windows or locks, no tach. But a/c and console. Love to take it on a boulevard drive
