Same Owner 15 Years: 1968 Pontiac GTO Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

General Motors redesigned its mid-size cars in 1968, including the Pontiac GTO. That helped give the car a shot in the sales arm, and that model year would deliver the vehicle’s second-highest production figures. This ’68 GTO looks like a rough project, yet the seller says it will be wearing new paint next week. Said to be numbers matching and in a warm garage in Rolla, Missouri, this Poncho is available here on craigslist, where the listing price of $30,000 is FIRM.

The Pontiac GTO was born in 1964 and started a revolution in Detroit. Expecting to sell just 5,000 of the muscle car that first year, sales broke 32,000 units and rose to nearly 97,000 copies in 1966. With the 1968 redesign, the car found almost 88,000 buyers. But demand started to fade, and insurance premiums for hot cars were on the rise, so the GTO would never recapture that demand magic. Its last year came in 1974 as a variant of the compact Ventura.

We’re told the seller has owned this Pontiac for more than 15 years and it’s been living in a heated garage. As a result, rust was not a problem then or now. Though some of the photos show the muscle car partially disassembled, the seller says it will soon be sporting new blue paint. So, will the buyer get a fully reassembled and painted car or what we see here? The 400 cubic inch V8 and 4-speed manual transmission have matching numbers, but does the machine even run? The odometer reads 28,000 miles (or is it 128,000?).

Besides the body and paint being remedied, the seller says the GTO comes with new interior components and rubber pieces for here and there. Health problems are preventing the seller from finishing and keeping the car, so the buyer will surely have some amount of DIY to perform. We’re told the seller has more in the Pontiac than the selling price, so his loss is your gain. Does all this add up to you?

30k firm for a car that needs a lot done still, even if the seller does finish paint. “Yes, honey, I placed an ad to sell the GTO. I am trying…”

I’m no expert, but it seems to me that new paint is the last thing to have done. A car needing lots of mechanical and body work won’t be useful until it runs.

The seller is a total clown. Tears the car apart with clearly no idea or plan with zero organization. “Paint job will be done in week” yeah I’ll bet the 30k it will not be done. Who knows what’s missing. And it’s 30 grand firm! Hope your health improves but…

Have fun with sipping beer looking at the project you have no ability or money to complete. There are turn key drivers on the market for the same money.

Another well organized garage! How do you get anything done when you can’t even walk around the car?
