For an eBay listing to begin with information about a vehicle’s history written by the terminally ill owner to be shared after he passes away is a pretty good indicator of what kind of love a car has received over the years, and that’s exactly what happened here with this 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000. Sadly, the late owner, Larry, realized his days on earth were numbered, and he wisely decided to document a myriad of details pertaining to his ownership of the car, which he purchased all the way back in 1974. It seems as though he cared for and had the GTV maintained up until near his final days, knowing it would soon be in the hands of a new owner and he wanted things to be right. The car is located in Tucson, Arizona, and can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $24,500, still shy of the seller’s reserve.
The Alfa Romeo is described as a remarkably original survivor, with the repair shop that has serviced the car since 2007 handling the sale for the owner’s widow. We get to see photos of the car both outside and inside the shop area, and although there’s no word on whether or not the car has ever had a respray, that red paint is said to look brilliant, with just a few light buff-through spots present. The condition of the body and gaps seem to be a strong testament that the car has indeed been the family treasure that the late owner calls it near the end of his writing.
The 2.0-liter engine was the big boy from the GTV lineup, and it was only available in the U.S. between 1972 and 1974, with the latter being the final year for United States sales. The motor features a twin-cam setup and fuel injection, and the seller says that service records for this car go back for about the last 20 years. In preparation for the sale, the late owner had extensive brake and front-end work performed, along with all new fluids added except for the radiator coolant. However, the car is said to still have the typical Alfa oil leaks. It’s also equipped with a 5-Speed manual transmission.
Things inside appear overall nicely preserved to be almost 50 years old, with only a few minor blunders pointed out, such as some cracks in the dash and a small tear in the rear seat. One item that has been upgraded is the radio, which was replaced with a new audio system in 2008. The seller deems the Alfa an honest and unrestored example, and I hope it will find its way into the hands of someone who will give it the same TLC that Larry did for the next 50 years. What are your thoughts on this 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000?
These are wonderful looking cars and for there era they were formable touring cars. Good write up but you have to read what the owner writes before his passing that is in the eBay listing. Had a passion for this car quite rightly so. Someone is going to get a wonderful Alfa. Has me thinking I might need one, only problem I see is finding someone that knows the mechanical aspects. The fuel injection is the biggest issue, I can still wrench but that is where experience is going to be a plus!
When I worked at the Alfa dealer the owner had a 73 in silver. His son was the other Alfa tech and he modified his car to use a Saab 900 turbo and intercooler. Modified the Spica pump to add fuel under boost and used the spare tire sump to fit a custom fuel cell that held aviation fuel. Car was amazing. I later learned of his passing when I cam across his car on eBay being auctioned. I really struggled finding out about his passing and really wanted to find a way to buy his car. One of the most beautiful designs ever made and why they have become so sought after.
A friend in the late 70s had a lovely red 1600 GT Junior about the same age as this beautiful car. Needing bits for my own car, that was on blocks on the street; he kindly loaned me his Alfa for my journey to a distant scrapyard.
“You bend it. You mend it” were his friendly warnings as he handed me the keys. What a blast it was to drive.
What an absolute bargain. It would be a six figure car in Australia.
Beautiful car and a great story from the late owner. His note explains the whole point of the automobile hobby. There are Alfa dealers here in Rochester and nearby Buffalo along with specialist shops in both locations. This is one of a very few cars I would part with my Corvette for, but I believe the final price will be well above my budget.
Arrivederci, bambini! Gone @ $32,500
Reserve was not met at $32,500.
Stolen at $32500. A desert car with this kind of history would raise at least 30% more on BaT.
Maybe it will show up on BaT since it did not meet reserve on eBay, i.e., it did not sell for $32,500.
Reserve Not Met at $32,500, so it is still available. Had I not just bought another car, I’d be all over this.
Welcome to my world. So are sportscars built. GT. Veloce.
30’000€ is the fair price for it. Maybe for some specimen in
rhd countries not when they went in panic mode seen some-
thing extraordinary. Dont worry. I’m sorry for you.
Had a ‘69 GTV. Sweetest gearbox I have ever owned.
