Scarab Green Survivor: 1994 Saab 900 S

It’s no accident that this Saab 900 convertible popped up in my feed of recommended finds courtesy of eBay; up until a few days ago, I had been hunting for one of these iconic convertibles. If you haven’t noticed, Saab 900s in sound condition are fetching good money these days, despite the fact that they were seemingly once everywhere you looked when the sun came out. Nice ones are hard to come by, and this example listed here on eBay has just over 20,000 original miles with a Buy-It-Now of $8,700.

That’s very reasonable money for a low-mile survivor like this, especially one equipped with the preferred five-speed manual. It’s a not a 900 Turbo – the top banana when it comes to Saabs of this generation – but the bodywork is in great shape, the top isn’t full of holes, and the interior is in beautiful condition. I did just purchase a 900 Turbo convertible in perhaps the rarest of colors, Monte Carlo Yellow, but it’s an automatic and will need to be swapped.

Now, there’s a discrepancy with the mileage and the photos show the original odometer sitting with the various books and manuals. What seems likely is that the car saw such little use, the original gears expired and a replacement was installed. The Experian report indicates it has closer to 32,000 miles, so true mileage remains unknown. But the interior condition is definitely that of a lower mileage car, and the seller does confirm it was owned by an older woman who barely drove it in the last 10 years.

The Scarab Green paint is a desirable color among Saab aficionados (at least from what I can tell in my search for one of the rarer colors ever offered), but the naturally aspirated heart may cause potential buyers to hold back in hopes of finding one in similar condition but with the turbocharged engine. Still, there’s a lot to like here, and the seller reports the top is new and cruise control still works – two faults most convertibles need addressed. The asking price seems more than fair for a nicely preserved classic 900.

At that price it should be an easy sell. I had 2 Scarab green Saab’s but they were both 9000 Aero models. 94 was the last of the 900 run. We worked on at least one Monte Carlo yellow 900 and we worked on a 91 SPG convertible in malachite green which I think was a one of one.

Great deal. I am sure several people that could afford these in the day had them as a third or fourth car for nice summer days. My 86 only has 37k on it. Definitely prefer the turbo but it didn’t come in this color in 94 – only the S. Looked at these back then and was considering the Turbo special edition. Last year of the 900c and only available as a convertible.

Indeed. As above, the car should sell easily, and someone will enjoy. Well done.

The price sounds reasonable….now the important question: Since Saab Auto has disappeared….how hard/easy is it to get replacement parts? What about body panels? It would be if you can find another parts car then it’s great!

Parts support is pretty strong for a old car. Parts are drying up though and reproduction parts are iffy. I rebuilt a manual transaxle for a friend 8 years ago and I had to find used parts. Maybe someone makes replacement parts by now.

I’m in love ❤ This is one of my favorite cars, and most I’ve looked at are beat to hell. I’m partial to red, but the green is nice too.
