This unusual VW-based kit car is called a Concept 1, which is super confusing when you consider the reincarnated VW “New” Beetle was called the same thing. This example, spotted by Barn Finds reader Jamie, is dusty but complete, even retaining its original T-top style roof. From the few original photos I can find, this example here on craigslist remains mostly true to form. The seller is asking $5,500 or best offer, and be sure to go here if the ad is archived.
The front headlights and T-tops are two design features I’ve seen disappear on the few examples to get profiled on projects like The Samba. That’s either a front or rear valence with auxiliary lighting sitting on the ground in front of it, but I’m guessing re-construction is a fairly simple affair. The seller mentions “gullwing doors” but I’m fairly certain that’s in reference to the custom roof.
The “International Champion” moniker is completely meaningless now, but it’s interesting to think of an auto show that got enough visibility that the Concept 1 could be considered a global champion The kit in illustrated form looks a bit brawnier than real life, but the fat tires and deep dish wheels certainly help enhance that effect.
Here’s a better picture of a completed example, although it’s missing the roof panel. I don’t love those wheels but the sizing looks appropriate for the body. This would certainly be an intriguing entry at any aircooled show, especially with a hotted-up Beetle motor out back. The fact that this Concept 1 still has the cool folding roof is a major selling point to me if you’re on the hunt for one of these rare buggies.
Thought I’d seen it before…in the sandbox.

I think of taking the body and doing this…

That’s pretty wild. I imagine they rack up a lot of tickets…
Dreaming!
This is Bugly. Which I’m using to mean “butt ugly” but it’s (sort of) a Bug, so hey!
