In The Shed For 30 Years! 1957 Commer Express Van

This rare Commer Express Delivery Van has been locked up in a shed for 30 years. Like so many other British barn finds, it looks like the shed is being overtaken by a garden, but thankfully, this particular find isn’t covered in undergrowth. The Commer shared much of its underpinnings with the Hillman Minx so it may not be as exotic as you were expecting. Find it here on eBay in the UK where bidding is over $3K.

The van is very honest, despite its three decades of storage. The seller says except for a few rust holes, the chassis is solid. It’s believable, too, as the body presents quite straight with the shut lines along the doors lining up near perfectly. The seller claims it was parked with its tired aired down and the radiator drained, clearly meant for long-term storage. The good news? It seemingly suffered no ill effects for its years off the road.

The interior is one of the best parts, looking more like it belongs in an art deco coupe than a utilitarian delivery van. The seats look like new, and the dash and floors present quite cleanly as well. For a worker vehicle with no mileage indicated, I’d have expected to see the cain completely trashed. This should have a four-speed gearbox on the column paired to a Hillman-derived 1.4L engine.

The boot was quite generous, with 100 cu feet in 1957. The preserved condition continues to the storage area, with a few spares noted, such as the radiator the prior owner removed before parking the Commer for an extended spell. With the range of British-built commercial vehicles produced in the 50s and 60s, the Commer is perhaps the individual’s choice in a sea of Mini Travelers and other vans; this one looks like it won’t take much to return the roads.

    Are those three lug wheels?

They are. Might be a pre-war pattern. Minxes and the like were 4-stud by then. That’s a very rare beast, don’t know if I’ve ever seen one; vans and trucks are usually driven into the ground, plus rustproofing was non-existent back then.

Note the lack of heater, too.

PUN 10 If that registration number is transferable, which maybe the case, then unfortunately it is worth far more than this Commer van fully restored into mint condition :-) so someone will buy this just to resell the number….. SAD!!

..given the fashion for private number plates in the UK ..and this one worth a whole lot more than the van..I hope the two stay together. What a great find and hope it gets a sympathetic restoration…rare indeed..and a useful classic to boot-albetit on local runs !

What a beautiful van! I live in Norway, this is a very rare van here too.
We have a few in our Rootes club, i am lucky to own 2 of the Commer Express. One is a 1958 model and the other is from 1962.
