Show-Quality Paint: 1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Project

Choosing to part with a classic project with the finish line in sight is tough, but it is the decision made by the owner of this 1969 Corvette. The hard lifting is done, with the drivetrain rebuilt and its panels wearing show-quality paint. A new owner needs to add the finishing touches required to return this potent beast to its rightful place on our roads. The ‘Vette is listed here on eBay in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania. Bidding sits below the reserve at $16,100, but the BIN option of $39,950 could be perfect for someone who finds this classic irresistible.

The seller became this Corvette’s custodian in 2009, immediately accumulating the parts required to return the car to a showroom-fresh state. They ensured the panels were perfect before applying a fresh coat of Cortez Silver paint. They describe the finish as of show quality, although they admit it has a couple of minor chips from being moved around the workshop. The work quality is such that I would probably hand the car to a professional to address those marks to guarantee perfection. I’m unsure whether they tackled the build as a frame-off project, but the underside shots suggest they did. The frame looks spotless, and with no evidence of birdcage issues, it is fair to believe this classic is rust-free. The chrome and glass are flawless, and the Rally wheels feature new trim rings and center caps.

This Corvette retains its original drivetrain, offering enough performance to satisfy almost anybody. The engine bay houses the L36 version of the legendary 427ci V8. It sends 390hp and 460 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. It features power steering but no assistance for the brakes. The combination makes this a potent package, with 150mph beckoning to those brave enough to keep the pedal to the metal. The seller indicates they have sunk over $70,000 into this build, and a decent percentage was below the skin. The numbers-matching mechanical components, like the big-block and transmission, were rebuilt to factory specifications. The process included fitting a new clutch, a range of new brake components, the correct hoses, pipes, manifolds, and smog equipment. The car has done no work since the work ended, leaving the new owner with the pleasure of breaking in what is effectively a new car.

Potential buyers won’t need to spend a fortune on its interior because most of the items required to add the finishing touches are included. The seats wear new Black vinyl covers, while the door trims and dash look excellent. The pad is in good order, and there are no signs of damaged plastic or other problems. New items include the center gauge cluster, the steering wheel, the headlamp switch, and other minor components. The original owner ordered this Corvette with air conditioning, power windows, and an AM/FM radio. These items are intact, and there are no aftermarket additions beyond the wheel.

I can’t imagine the frustration felt by the seller because the restoration of this 1969 Corvette is close to complete. The hard work is done, and most of what is left represents nothing but assembly. They include a list of parts required to round out the build, and compared to the $70,000 already spent, they will cost peanuts. It has only attracted four bids, which might reflect that many people are reluctant to pick up the pieces in cases like this, no matter how promising they look. However, plenty of time remains on this auction, leaving scope for the action to intensify in the final hours. Would you be tempted to pursue this project further, or would you prefer to remain an interested spectator?

Been in this situation. Buy tons of parts. Life gets in the way. A 69 BB with air and 4 speed in beautiful silver at $40,000. A bargain. Paint today, a good quality job, is $15,000 alone.

Very good bones with numbers matching muscle to boot. If I had room I’d go get this one, last year for the 427 too!

When I think of Big Daddy Rat I think of this car not of Ed Roth , sacrilege maybe but not when you grow up watching tractor pulls with tractors having 4 or 6 blown 427 screaming !

Certainly a bargain at the current bid, but unlikely to meet reserve. I’d want to see & hear the engine running. I had a 76 454 sitting for 8 years and when I tried to start it, the engine was frozen and no amount of Marvel Mystery oil would free it up. My theory is that a few valves would be open and those cylinders “breathing” with day-night temperature changes would condense enough moisture to rust up. Perhaps this is a recent rebuild or kept in a temperature-controlled environment. Still, I’d want to se it running.

Good looking car. The frame and suspension appear rust free, and it is very likely that this was a “body off” resto. Provided that the previous work was done correctly, this could be a great deal and the next owner can move forward. Chrome bumpers, big block, 4 speed, A/C, this car has it all.

This is the Holy Grail of Vettes to me. The year, running gear, color and presentation ALL check my boxes. Only problem for me… 42 years of marriage and there’s not enough room to sleep/live in it. However, a tent and camping equipment almost makes this sweet ride a tempting gamble. If only…

Beautiful car with lots of potential.
Is it me or do the rally wheels/rings look wonky?

The BIN price is fair on this beast. A fine example that deserves to rule the roads again.
