Snake Bite: 1997 Dodge Viper GTS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

I can remember the first time that I saw a Dodge Viper. It was dark metallic blue, and it just about blew my socks off! This one has a similar effect on me. Those who have read my articles on Barn Finds will know that I have a love of Fords and British cars. I also love cars that are totally outrageous. The Viper is just such a car. Located in Alpharetta, Georgia, this Viper is for sale here on eBay. With a clear title and a BIN price of $44,900 and the option to make an offer, this is a car that offers you the chance to stand out in the crowd.

The current owner has been in possession of this Viper for more than 18 years. In that time he has clocked up roughly 11,000 miles, which brings the total from new to 15,616. This thing is barely run in! The body and paint exhibit the sort of shine and finish that you’d expect for a car of this mileage. It’s not perfect, but it’s well above average for a car of this age.

The interior looks to be in generally good condition. There is some stretching of the material on the driver’s seat cushion, but there’s nothing drastic. This black interior gives the impression of a dark and evil cave. I guess that it’s the right impression with a monster like this.

There’s the heart of the beast. That’s the wonderful 8 liter V10. In spite of the capacity, these engines were known less for their brute horsepower and more for their brute torque. This particular engine is said to run perfectly and is exactly as it left the factory. In fact, according to the seller the only modification on this car is an upgrade to the cooling fan.

As far as pricing goes this Viper sits around about the middle of prices for similar cars, although none that I found featured mileage this low. This is one car that I’ve never had a chance to drive, but have always wanted to. Have you driven one? Did you enjoy it? Did you enjoy it enough to want this one?

Nicest barn find in a while. Park it for a little longer and let the dust build up, floors rot out, and we can all complain about yet another krusty kar paying for someone’s kid’s college plan.
    too new / too nice

Have a buddy with a ragtop Viper- cant remember the year, but scared the daylights out of me barking the tires in every gear!

Vipers are all over the map price wise. This is about middle of the road. It’s nice and appears rightly priced. I want a blue one w/white stripes, please. I saw one that was BTS recently for $24,000. Sad. Maybe I’d give up the blue for the right one..(As long as it’s blue.)

My brother just bought a 2001 with 15,868 miles in Portland OR for $34k, and it is absolutely perfect. They’re out there, based on what he has told me this one is overpriced.

Can’t deny the cool factor on a Viper but I could buy a fairly expensive driver-quality classic and the shed to keep it in for that kind of money.

I bought a new one of these in Alaska in 1997. I drove it during the summer on dry days and then shipped it to Washington state. I drove it all over the United States. It was absolutely fantastic for road trips. David E. Davis said so his own damn self. lol. I’ve had quite a few high-end sports cars, but this thing was a blast on the open road. Could drive it 600 miles a day, no sweat.

I used to work at a Dodge dealership many years ago, we always has a few Vipers in inventory. I remember the sales manager would love to take people for a ride in them. He would put a $100 bill on the dash and tell the unsuspecting passenger it was his if he could get it. As the person was reaching for it he would nail the thing throwing the passenger back in the seat so hard and fast they could never get the bill. May not be the most high tech car but scary fast

come too papa. I always preferred the Viper over the Vette and I’m a Mustang guy at heart.

Love these cars! Really like the early models though. I have a 97 ram 2500 with the 8 liter since new. It now has 357,000 miles great engines though not the same beast as the viper!

I own a 95 viper and I can assure you I can grab money off the dash….I had a 69 SS396 Chevelle 4 speed car that pinned you to the seat much harder than the viper….the viper is quicker and faster but does not have that old muscle car feel when you hammer on it.

A first gen RT/10 is on my list of cars to own before I get too old to enjoy it. I drove one many years ago, and it is a feeling you don’t forget. The earlier cars are just brutal. Plain Jane, no frills, just a car that politely asks you to “get in so that I may rip your face off please!”. Gotta love it!

A rear gear change really brings out the animal in them.

Was just talking to a Vette guy the other day when spurted out his Viper crush. Like he was I was kinda shocked they still bring good money after the Bowtie and FOMOCO guys get thru bashing ma Mopar.

I actually have driven one! My best friend for life has one I let him drive my Cobra and I drove his Viper! No, we didn’t face them off or line them up to race! There really didn’t seem much different, and he agreed with me! With both of them you can feel the raw horse power as soon as you turn that key! It was just as nice as my Cobra in every way!

They have a really strange exhaust note that is annoying to me.
    Fun and fast car anyway.

Southbound, always thought the same for the side pipe cars. This one, with both exhaust coming out the back, should sound like any other V10 engined car. I prefer the “out the back” exhaust on these cars.

Stood next to one that was idling and the ground was shaking!! Gotta admire Mopar for going the distance to make something a little different, for better or for worse like the demon, prowler, PT,, Viper etc.

American Iron that will give you whiplash…gotta love it…
