Snow Cooled in New Mexico: VW Karmann Ghia Pair

Despite living in the desert environs of New Mexico, this pair of Karmann Ghias is still dealing with one of Mother Nature’s most loathed conditions known as winter. The seller notes that the listing is for one convertible that looks relatively complete, and a coupe shell that has no engine but retains a transmission. Speaking of loathed, this listing calls for you to make an offer even though the seller knows what they’re worth. Find the pair of Karmann Ghias here on craigslist near Albuquerque.

Ghia convertibles are beginning to get some more love at car shows and auctions, but they’re still hard sells when in project-grade condition. They made a lot of them, and many are still languishing in backyards like this car. The earlier models are the most desirable, and this car retains the “bullet style” turn signals that some air-cooled enthusiasts prize over the later models. I always liked the bumperettes better on the earlier cars, along with the smaller tail lights.

The interior of the convertible is a mess, not helped by the disintegrating soft top. The cabin will need full restoration, from removing the seats and the dash to replacing the carpets and any floor rot. The seller says due to the New Mexico location, rust is minimal on both cars, but these air-cooled coupes still like to rust even under the best of circumstances. Fortunately, it’s not the dreaded autostick and features a conventional manual transmission.

Here’s the other Ghia, which is a later car with the wraparound turn signals. The bumpers are missing and the craigslist photos show some bodywork on the driver’s side rear fenders. Speaking of that, both cars show evidence of prior repairs and patchwork, so factor in some amount of bodywork into an offer you come up with. The convertible does retain its motor and transmission; no word on if they’re numbers matching.

Another “loathed” seller…………..I mean if you want to sell some junkyard quality old Ghias, get down on your hands and knees and beg someone to take them. Its not like we don’t have other choices. Like Jim Morrison said…………………
