Solid Project: 1967 Mercury Cougar

Sitting in Marietta, Georgia, is this 1967 Mercury Cougar, just waiting for someone to breathe new life into it. The car not only appears to be complete, if partially dismantled, but it also appears to be very solid. If this is a car that you have really taken a shine to, you will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist, where it is being sold with a clean title.

The photos for this Cougar leave a bit to be desired, but piecing them together appears to indicate that this is a very solid car. The front floors look like they may have some surface corrosion, which should be easy to fix. The rest of the floors appear solid, and there is no visible external rust in the quarter panels, rockers, or lower fenders. The black vinyl top also appears to be in good order. There is a piece of trim missing from the deck-lid, but that’s really about it.

The mechanical condition of the car also starts to get a bit blurred. I believe that the car has been sitting for quite some time. The V8 engine runs using an external gas supply, as the fuel system looks like it needs a clean. The seller does say that the engine sounds nice and that the car drove a few years ago. I believe that the owner is suggesting that the car should be fully serviced and checked before any attempt is made to drive it.

The interior is actually complete, although most of the trim has been removed, and is neatly laid out on the seller’s workshop floor. The dash appears to be in good condition, and most of the trim items look like they could be used once they’ve been given a good clean. The one item that is missing is the carpet, so a replacement would need to be sourced.

All in all, this Cougar looks like quite a solid project car that won’t need a huge amount of work to prepare it for a return to the road. With so many of these suffering from rust issues, finding one that is basically rust-free is a real bonus. With the price set at $10,995, it may not be the cheapest Cougar project car for sale at present. However, in its current, partially dismantled state, you will at least have a fair idea of what you are buying, and you will hopefully avoid any nasty surprises down the track.

I question the clear title claim.

Georgia doesn’t issue titles for older cars, so the seller would need to show said title.

The seller knows enough not to use the old gas or the old fuel system to start it up so good on them.

I love the ’67………..with a manual though. I had a 67-68 vert many moons ago. The body looks more or less polished up but the interior looks to have mold on the seats…kinda curious. Frankly, for 11K, I’d want a running and ready to roll ’67 Cougar. When you’ve bought these cars for 750 bucks its just hard to see them at this price point not ready to go.

The first model year that Mercury offered the Cougar as a convertible was 1969.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Seems a little high with it needing a new interior, and all the unknowns including: brakes, fuel system, engine, transmission, suspension, exhaust, and so on….

What is a 67-68 vert? Cougars did not produce a Convertible until 1969.

This is a great price for a person wanted to have a nice cougar It is priced out of the “flipper” dealer range. 1200 dollar cougar days are long gone my friends.

This a good price for this car. This is a bad price for the upper lipper flipper.

About 10 miles from me. Seems like a lot of unanswered questions for that much money.

This is a fairly plain jane Cougar. It is a standard Cougar, not an XR-7. For options I only see PS and automatic transmission. It has been repainted in a non original color, you can see the original color on the floorpans. Who knows what might be hiding under that paint? The vinyl top is aftermarket, you can tell by the moulding that separates the vinyl from the painted body. This car only has the 2 piece moulding set that is chrome or aluminum. An original vinyl top would be a 4 piece set that would be painted black. 11K original miles? The seller would need to prove that claim for me.
$11K? That seems high to me. More like $5K to 6K to me.
