If you’ve ever dreamed of building your own featherweight sports car with mid-engine balance and true vintage flair, this 1971 Lotus Europa might be calling your name. Offered here on eBay as an unfinished project, this classic British coupe includes a fiberglass body, the original frame, a Ford Zetec 4-cylinder engine, and a full set of wheels and tires—making it a promising starting point for a rewarding restoration or restomod.
The Lotus Europa was designed in the late 1960s as a mid-engine sports car for the road, heavily influenced by Colin Chapman’s racing philosophies. Lightweight construction, nimble handling, and simple yet effective powertrains made the Europa a favorite among enthusiasts who prioritized driving feel over luxury.
This example, finished in classic British Racing Green over a black interior, is currently in non-running condition and described as being in rebuild status. While details are minimal, the inclusion of the fiberglass body, frame, and all four wheels gives a good foundation to start from. The original drivetrain is no longer present—in its place is a Ford Zetec 4-cylinder, a popular choice for Lotus conversions thanks to its reliability, lightweight nature, and aftermarket support.
The Ford Zetec, often found in 1990s and early 2000s Fords, is a durable and rev-happy DOHC engine that offers a modern twist on the Europa’s character. Depending on how far you want to go, it can be paired with a variety of transaxles and tuned to make solid horsepower without upsetting the Lotus’s famously low curb weight.
From a restoration perspective, Europas aren’t the easiest cars to work on—but for the right builder, they offer one of the purest driving experiences of the era. The body is fiberglass, so rust isn’t a major concern, though the steel frame does warrant inspection. Given that this one is a project, it’s assumed that some level of refurbishment or custom fabrication will be needed to bring it back to the road.
Whether you see this as a faithful rebuild or an opportunity to create a spirited, lightweight special with modern underpinnings, this 1971 Lotus Europa has real potential—and a lot of garage time ahead for the enthusiast who’s up to the challenge.

Looks like a fun project but it’s a Europa, not an Elan…
and a Europa could run rings around a Elan
Same copy as the ‘other’ Elan?
Elizabeth, I think the copy for your Elan writeup may have gotten transposed to this Europa feature..
Breadvan Elan ??
On Ebay it says Europa and Sold.
Says Europa on Ebay and Sold.
Another non runner…
Someone swapped out the Renault engine for the ford not a bad choice lots of questions about what’s not there. Hope the buyer inspected. If everything is there then a decent deal
Just saw it is sold
I’ve reached a point in my life … about my dream cars … where I love it, I can afford it, but I can’t fit in some of them anymore.
A Europa is one of them
Those are fun little go karts, I bought one once from a Chrysler design engineer, he had several Europa modification idea drawings. It had a Weber carb and was a pretty fast car.
They sure were, and no one could catch them on a twisty road, I had a 73 Europa Spl (JPS) with the Big Valve Twin Cam & 5 spd
For the record:
SOLD for $3,383.33(?)
Elizabeth here, I accidentally put the wrong copy for the wrong Lotus, the dangers of working with two Lotus cars in one day. MAJOR FACE PALM! I’ve corrected to the right car
