Special Edition Project: 1968 Ford Galaxie XL GT

You don’t see many of these pop up anymore, especially in mostly untouched form. Listed here on craigslist out of Tucson, this 1968 Ford Galaxie XL GT is described as a very rare find, and it certainly checks a lot of appealing boxes for Ford fans. If you’ve been waiting for a big-body blue-oval project with the right factory ingredients, this one might be worth a closer look. Thanks for the tip Rocco B.!

According to the seller, this Galaxie is a true XL GT Edition. That GT badge meant something in the late ’60s, and finding one equipped the way this one is makes it even more intriguing. Under the hood sits a 390 V8, and inside, it features bucket seats, a console shifter, and a factory tachometer, a combination that gives it a sportier feel than the more common bench-seat, column-shift Galaxies from the era. The seller says the car still wears its original paint and remains “very complete” and “all original,” which is becoming increasingly rare 55+ years later.

This one does need a full restoration, so it’s being sold as a project rather than a turn-key cruiser. The seller notes the automatic transmission needs a rebuild and the car is not drivable as it sits. The good news is that the car is described as complete, which often makes the restoration process far less painful—especially with a trim-heavy model like the XL. A clean Arizona title is also a plus, and should make transferring ownership straightforward.

At an asking price of $6,500 firm, this feels like a realistic entry point for someone looking to take on a rare Ford muscle-era cruiser without starting six figures in the hole. The seller is open to a trade as well, and invites phone calls or texts for anyone serious enough to discuss it further.

Whether you’d restore it to factory-fresh condition, keep the original paint and preserve the survivor look, or build it into a highway-eating family GT tribute, this ’68 has a lot going for it. The combination of GT trim, 390 power, and desirable interior layout gives this big Ford the bones of something special once brought back to life.

If you had this rare XL GT in your garage, would you restore it, preserve it, or customize it into your ideal big-block cruiser?

Written up by Jim on October 3. Looks to have new(?) tires on the left side. A flip? In any case, a cool, rarely-seen big cruiser.

Looks like a flip. This ad seems like it has less information that what previous seller included in his ad, yet nearly doubled the price. I’d be more concerned about the undercarriage rust from the last time it was featured than the transmission.

Only thing missing is engine pictures. Seems like a OK deal!

This would be a real eye catcher if stripped, smoothed out and painted black, with a set of big Magnum 500 wheels… very rare and unique fastback. The black interior appears as if could slide right into it as it sits, although you can see some imperfections. Is the engine original?? What are the HP and torque specs? Definitely deserves a closer look if someone is interested. The price seems reasonable to today’s standards.

Not sure the reason. You just don’t see many 68’s. Lots of 67s and 69 and 70’s.

No AC and crank windows is a no go. I like the interior though and that big fastback look.

Well you have to rebuild or replace the transmission so just go-ahead and rebuild the engine add vintage air and you will have a nice cruiser for when spring comes back from the dead

I believe I would leave its battle scars , they illustrate the cars history. And only restore , repair, replace as needed . I have a 1969 XL GT , 390 GULFSTREAM AQUA METALLIC , white interior bucket seats, center shift, ac ps pb and yes Manuel windows . And that is exactly how I have approached this one . I love the engineering , handling, looks . If only this would make a great stablemate .

I had a ’68 much like this with the fastback and a 390. It wasn’t an XL but I still liked it a lot
