Special Production: 1990 Ferrari Testarossa Pininfarina Spider

I recently started following an Instagram account that focuses entirely on the car collection belonging to the Sultan of Brunei. It’s an amazing page, not only documenting the insane cars stored in numerous underground garages but also the movements of the cars when they are transported by plane for servicing around the world. This 1990 Ferrari Testarossa is an almost one-off Spider conversion undertaken by Pininfarina at the request of the Brunei Royal Family. After building seven spider conversions in different colors, Pininfarina built a handful of others for significant clients, which is the genesis of this example that has never been registered and has just 413 kilometers. Find the Pininfarina Spider “Special Production” Testarossa here on the RM Sothebys website.

This whole notion of being able to call a coachbuilder like Pininfarina and ask them to build you the car of your dreams is – well, nuts, but it happens. More than we think. The Brunei collection is basically one giant playground of custom performance cars that the rest of us would love to own but we collectively don’t possess enough money or power to get it done. Hell, we can’t even get the likes of Subaru to make a BR-Z with real horsepower. So, when you see a model like this, you stand a bit in awe because it’s not just the money to pay the outrageous price tag a car like this commands, but having the clout to get someone at Pininfarina to pick up the phone when you decide your toy box needs a new plaything.

But, like so many other cars that are parts of massive collections, this one was hardly ever used. In fact, the listing discloses that there’s no registration paperwork because the Ferrari has technically never been put on the road. That could be problematic for the next owner, but at the same time – given this is essentially an unused Testarossa – I doubt it’s going to ever see much roadgoing use. Still, like any proper billionaire, the owner has had the Spider extensively serviced in preparation for sale despite the fact that it’s never been used. To make you feel even worse, it went to two factories: Pininfarina to revive the top mechanism, and “…Carrozzeria Zanasi—the Maranello-based specialist used by the Ferrari factory for the finishing and paintwork of all Prancing Horse supercars.”

The visit to Pininfarina cost €94,300, while the stop by Carrozzeria Zanasi cost €83,170 and included a new fuel pump and clutch. Oh, and we forgot to mention that when it was at Pininfarina, the whole car was repainted. This is effectively a brand-new car despite it already being a brand-new car. The whole thing will leave your brain in knots, but I can assure you, whatever it sells for will make the maintenance investments seem like pocket change. The Pininfarina Spider goes up for auction on November 5.

I sat in this cars brother back in the day.
I worked for a car magazine and the Sultan had sold his tin top Testarossa to one of my dealers. It had been left unused at one of his house, had really low mileage and cracking leather through lack of use.
I was asked to move it but the battery was dead sadly.
I have a photo somewhere still. It was circa 1998 from memory.

So let’s see, a brand new car with zero miles needs a fuel pump and clutch?

Car left standing with unleaded fuel, the condensation in the fuel tank finds its way to the bottom and then the fuel pump. The clutch plate gets stuck to (either) the flywheel or the pressure plate.
What concerns me more is the cost of

Ugh. Wrong hand drive. No thanks.

Curious about the Subaru BRZ h.p. comment. Any moderately accomplished driver can have a riot with that car and it’s modest 200 h.p.
Perhaps a day or two on a circuit with an instructor will equip you with the skill set required to get the most out of one of those little gems. Good luck.

Insane maintenance/repair costs. Get a Vette they are almost maintenance free. Corvettes have been incredibly reliable since the 1997 year to date.
