Split Personality: 1971 Chevrolet Camaro

Here is a storage fresh 1971 Chevrolet Camaro. The car is said to be an unrestored Camaro with the original engine and transmission. The car is listed here on eBay with 3 days remaining in the auction. The current bid is $6,100 and the reserve is not met.  The car is located in Assonet, Massachusetts. No matter what condition you find the 1970-1973 Camaro, the front split bumper just looks cool.

The green interior is faded, torn and dirty but looks to be all there. This Camaro looks unique because it has bucket seats, no console and a column shifter. As most enthusiast know, the Firebird and Camaro received high back bucket seats in 1971. In 1970, both the Firebird and Camaro has low back bucket seats with headrests.

While the block is said to be numbers matching, some performance goodies have been added to the engine including a mild cam, aluminum intake manifold and headers. In 1971, Chevrolet was required to introduce engines that could handle low lead (low octane) fuel. The base engine in the Camaro was a 250 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine rated at 155 horsepower. Since the inline 6 cylinder engine, the small block 307 cubic inch V8 engine and the small block 350 cubic inch V8 engine (L-65) were already low compression engines, their horsepower ratings did not change much. This car is a column shift automatic. So, I imagine that it left the factory with the L-65  350 cubic inch V8 engine that was fed through a two barrel carburetor. A buyer could also opt for two big block options including a 300 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8  or a 260 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. If I am not mistaken, the 454 cubic inch V8s was no longer available in the Camaro. The LT-1 350 cubic inch V8 engine was still available and in its last year of production. It was rated at 330 horsepower.

The car is said to come with many of its original parts including the original intake manifold, air conditioning and carburetor. This is some rot and rust in the lower driver fender and passenger rocker panel. The floor boards are also showing daylight. Surprisingly, the quarter panels are not showing rust or rot.

    Once again, in the interests of correction/education, this is not a split bumper Camaro (Another poster called the other one posted earlier, a “no bumper” car!) This is a non Rally Sport Camaro, unlike the picture. GLWTA!!

      It’s not good when writers on what’s supposed to be an automotive enthusiasts website, spread more misinformation. When Barnfinds’ writers are wrong (something that happens often), they should expect to be corrected by more knowledgeable readers. To ignore mistakes made by the writers is a disservice to other readers, and is harmful to the car hobby.

    I believe the spoiler is off an 1976 Camaro.

      Look closer that’s a 72-73 spoiler. From 74 on they were cutout on the sides for the bigger wrap around tail lights. The 1970 spoilers were 1 piece as were most of the 1971 were short.

    I’ve said this many times,back in the day, you went to auto salvage yards,you would scavage all the good stuff,Bel- Air trim inside and out,split bumpers, hood scoops,spoilers, you get the pic, they are not O-E anymo.

    The 454 was never available in a factory ordered Camaro, but Yenko or Baldwin Motion of Long Island New York would get you a 454 plus other upgrades, for a custom build

    The spoiler looks like a 73 model, definitely not from a 76. Overall, this car is a hot mess.

    not a real split bumper.hate the spoiler. My perfect camaro would be a 1970 Z-28 with the rs real split bumper and the the smaller spoiler, and the correct wheels.
