Split Window For $3,500!

Bet this isn’t the “split window” you were thinking of when you read the title. When most people hear those two words together, they envision a 1963 Corvette or an early VW Beetle. Well, it turns out that there have been a lot of other cars built with two panes of glass in the back. This one is a 1939 Chrysler New Yorker and it can be found here on craigslist in Green Cove Springs, Florida for $3,500. The rear may look neat, but this pre-war Mopar had much more to offer than just a window that was hard to see out of. Thanks goes to reader Chuck F for the submission!

The New Yorker name may be well known today, but before 1939 it was just a model that went by New York Special Sedan. Customers started to call them “New Yorkers” though so Chrysler went with it and officially started using the designation. As the title suggests, these were classy cars. They offered many innovative features and Chrysler capitalized on them by letting the marketing department come up with catchy names. There was Fluid Drive, Safety-Signal, and Superfinish. Read up on them all and I think you will be impressed. Lot’s of interesting history here, but it is going to take a special person to appreciate it enough to take this project on because the restored value probably won’t be enough for it to make sense financially. But, then again, when did any of this make sense financially?

Bout fell out of my chair when I saw split window and $3500. But then I noticed the trunk was the wrong shape, and this was not a vw. Hopes and dreams crushed.

Odd. The ad says it is an Arizona car but it is advertised in Jacksonville fla craigslist. Which state is all the dirt from? Where is/was it?

I wonder how much of it you get for $3500? Looks like just the body with no front end or frame in those photos.

That’s what I see also. No frame, drivetrain, front end or rear fender(s) (At least the driver’s rear is missing). NOT so much of a great buy unless you know of a handy donor car…

If it was complete it would be a worthwhile project. A big old sedan like that is hard to come by. Of course I’d much rather have a ’38 than a ’39. The front ends on the ’38s looked better in my opinion.

Tiger Woods drove a split-window the night his ex-wife took a golfclub to his Escalade.
