There’s no doubt that Chevrolet’s Corvette is cool, but let’s be honest, they aren’t all that practical. Now, I get that practicality isn’t all that high on most Corvette owner’s priority list, but there are times when you wish your car had a little more room or functionality. Enter, the Corvette Sport Wagon! This 1970 Corvette has been modified extensively with a hatchback roof and rear seats! While it’s still not the most practical car in the world, it’s incredibly cool and is capable enough to make trips to the hardware store. You can find this breadvan here on eBay in Palm Desert, California with a current bid of $7,625.
The seller didn’t include many photos in their listing, so we don’t get a look at the 454 V8 or the interior. We do get a look at the back seat, which is very much ’70s in its style with some serious button-tuck upholstery. It would be great to get a full view of the interior, but it’s probably a safe bet that it’s also customized and in need of restoration. I’ve very curious to know what the rear legroom is like and what having passengers in the back does to handling. Obviously, Chevrolet didn’t engineer the Corvette to have rear seats, so I wonder how the weight balance is and if anything was structurally modified to make this work.
It really would be great to know more about this car’s history. The conversion looks to have been done very nicely. There were a few different styles of wagon conversion kits out there and this appears to be one of the higher-end ones. It would be great to know who did the work though and when exactly it was done. The seller notes that the fold-down seat was custom-built by the owner.
Talk about a cool find, but you’ll definitely want to go take a look at this one in person! The lack of photos and details makes it difficult to really know what is going on here. There’s no word on whether it runs or not, but the seller claims that the brakes are all new so hopefully that means it drives. With a 454 and a 4-speed, this could be a fast and unique Classic to have! What do you think? Will you be taking a closer look at this one?
you won’t see another car like it. you don’t want to see another one either.
I think they are awesome. Seen lots before. Come on how awesome is room for a few guitars and amps in a Vette? Better that trying to lug on my Harley HhhhaaAa
Or the fastest shooting brake ever with a little shade tree mechanics & summit or jegs catalog!
See also the “Elanbulance”; there were two of them, I think.
Don’t you mean “break”, monsieur? LOL
Break
In France. Brake, everywhere else.
Hi – I accidentally clicked the “report comment” button!!!! I did not mean to do that. Sorry.
I’ve accidentally bumped the report comment button also. Needs to be an undo button for inadvertent reporting.
looks like it was a 1980 vette’. not 1970
I agree. Probably hit the wrong number when first placed the ad.
Corvette Vista Bruiser!
I don’t want my corvette to be practical. Not even a little.
Oof.. I love the wagon conversions, but this one.. yikes. Hit on the driver front fender, rear quarter isn’t fitting well (or rear valance, like it matters). If it stays under $10K it might be a salvageable toy..
Why put in a back seat? – defeats the purpose of a small station wagon & a car that never intended to have a back seat. Would not want to sit back there either, espec with that glass roof!
IMO, there’s nothing worse than “converting” a chrome bumpered Vette of this gen to one with a late ’70s front end. & even worse, what happened to the rear end? I’m still trying to figure out where those tailites came from. Maybe a ’67 RS Camaro?
This should only have been done to a ’74 -’81 vette – that was wrecked.
Say what you want, it still looks better than any modern SUV.
Hope you are joking. I used to think that the converted Mustangs were pretty ugly but no, this Corvette POC is really the dogs breakfast!
If I want a wagon it’ be a real Fully Sized Antique, Classic and Vintage Beach Wagon/Station Wagon with all the bells and whistles with every option you can think of.
Nice looking Corvette Wagon. If i were to buy that wagon i would do a full complete off the frame restoration and engine overhaul and reassemble it better than ever.
What you don’t like the shagging wagon!
You would be known if you owned this,it’s horribly cool,in a weird strange odd and powerful way.
I’d have gone with a Vega wagon hatch and taillights myself…still a cool concept if not something I’d want to own.
“two people can sleep in it”. Uh, sure. Reminds me of 70s stuff I saw as a kid, paint, mods, and all. Weird, but I like it! I would take this any day over boring new cars these days
Woodstock maybe?
Wow, I think this car has a lot of reactions based on all the comments. Probably the most l have seen for one car! Hey, here is the deal. You either love it or hate it!! I drive past this car everyday, as I live around the corner from this gentleman. It stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw it. It’s a very unusual car.
I remember I had a model back in 1970 or 71 Corvette van. It was a cool model. it had custom decals to put on it. And a blower sticking out of the hood. This brought back memories seeing this ride. It’s going need work so I hope for the buyer it stay at$10,000 or below. 🐻🇺🇸
I’m wondering if that’s the original owner in that photograph.
He’d have been a dashing young man when this thing was built.
I’m sure the Corvette purists are clutching their chests. This one that GM should have built, back in the day.
As usual, the naysayers win, I think it’s really cool. There’s an interesting story behind Corvette “Sport Wagons”. The creator, Chuck Miller, built the 1st one for a rock and roll drummer who needed more room. And that drummers name,,,( leaning forward with anticipation)was supposedly David Robinson. Who, you might ask? The drummer for the coolest rock bands ever, The Cars,,,or so a story goes. Some say it was the drummer from the Doobie Brothers that originally contacted Miller. Apparently, after 1976, a man named John Greenwood took over, and jazzed it up a bit, but what’s clear, with only a few dozen built, they are extremely rare, like only 2 remaining. Something not right here, as I read, the originals( 1970-1976) didn’t have an opening back window, or a back seat, mentioned was added later. Cool paint, wagon body on the coolest American car made, 454, side pipes, mags,,, what’s not to like?
“…what’s not to like?” The paint job.
Rock and roll Howard agree .
Everything!
As historical aside. When the first one was built? David Robinson hadn’t yet co-founded The Cars. He would have been with The Modern Lovers.
You could improve the looks of this car by taking out the black portions of the custom paint job. Don’t care for the rear end design but overall not bad looking. Worth buying just for the uniqueness factor.
Kinda looks like a “Big Daddy Ed Roth” Vette-emotion models that myself and my little brother used to put together back in the 60s. Can’t say that it’s not unique.
If your testosterone level is a little lacking this might put a smile on your wifes face and put some pep in your girlfriends walk. Fleeting thought.
That’s a guy who’s looking for the ‘wtf’ factor..
Front and rear on this are off of a 1980 Vette. Bet that 454 is a monster hp model. I put one in my 68 when the original motor grenaded. I like this car! I think its done well and wish I was in the market for one. I would have given it some serious thought
Actually, the front looks to be off an 81 or 82 – the more “squared off” design. The rear is from prior to 81, but I can’t see enough to even guess what year.
What a shame!
What is that behind the drivers side rear tire ? A new type of emergency brake ?
This is called “how to ruin an otherwise decent Corvette in one easy step”. Oh well, there’s no accounting for taste.
I don’t even like Corvettes but even so they are much better looking when they are original than when they look like this!
Not bad , first thing fit and finish with a nice paint job . Different wheels and tires and get rid of the terrible back seat and the tufted headliner . Make the back flat for maybe a set of golf clubs . Or a lift up style hatch to put a few car care supplies / groceries in the back where the seat used to be . That’s my vision on making it a cool ride. Love the side pipes
What is it about plain, ugly stock wheels that you seem to like do much??
What is it about plain, ugly stock wheels that you seem to like so much??The perfect car for Cars & Coffee.
I am a Corvette purist, and I enjoy the original look of these cars. But, this wagon is Kooky and very COOL! 454 with a 4 speed, this car is probably a great ride. I may take a drive down to Palm Desert to check it out and see if my skis will fit into this wagon.
This car is awesome!! Plenty of stock Corvettes out there for the purists.
My claustrophobia is screaming just thinking of getting into that rear seat.
I like it, It appears that besides the rear glass that retracts it also has a tailgate that folds down, I don’t think that the tailgate was even available with the Greenwood kit and also the retractable glass. Those two aspects of this conversion make it much more desirable over the sport wagons that don’t have a tailgate & retracting glass, that is if you even like these sport wagons.
I could learn to like the look if it had a different paint job. You would think the seller would provide more photo’s to really show it off. Or are they attempting to hide something. It appears there is a problem with the paint on the roof between the side glass and the rear hatch. Also the trim on the left side glass isn’t fitting correctly.
Horrifying abomination.
Are you referring to the “report comment button”? . .
So I remember attending a Porsche Autocross and this “kid” shows up in a Subaru wagon. I mean really?!? We teased him horribly. Until he ran the course. He refused to show us the engine, but he was up on 2 wheels cornering and came in 3rd overall. So…..wagon or not, this Vette has a 454 with a 4 speed and will leave 90% of today’s cars in the dust wondering what pizza delivery dude is late to his next stop! LOL
Ok if you want a cool station wagon do a mad max station wagon you guys know the red family car he had that’s cool. This I think someone was high when they built it. It would even get mad max car respect and there were some pretty cool cars built for those movies
That wasn’t a station wagon, it was a “panel van”. Think Australian “ute” but with a covered bed.
Looks like it needs to be in a salvage yard.
According to the VIN in the ad, this is (or was) a 1970 Corvette convertible. The front clip and rear quarters have been replaced with panels from a much later C3 and those tail lights look to be from an El Camino or G-body wagon from the late 70’s/early 80’s. So that means this Vette was at least 10-12 years old when then conversion was done, and probably would have been on its way to the crusher had it not been saved.
I’m a Vette lover (I’ve had 8 of them) and 99% of the time prefer them factory stock, but in this case I think the wagon is far more interesting than a stock C3. If the conversation was done right & the car is structurally sound, I’d give the exterior a cosmetic restoration, make the interior liveable, and enjoy roasting the tires at every stoplight.
Back in the early to mid 80’s I worked for a company that provided Valet & Lot Security at some of the bigger bars/clubs in the Chicago suburbs. No exaggeration here, about every 5th car was a C3 Vette! Everybody had them & most were trashed rattle traps! I’ve always loved the Chrome Bumper C3’s & honestly, most were 74 or newer – but they were all pretty much junk to me.
Now, normally people would say “a 19/20 y.o. kid, what do you know…” Well, let me tell you, through that job I got to drive; a Couple of Countach’s (Walter Peyton’s was one – I also drove all of his Buick demo’s as well), Porsche’s, Alfa’s, a Rolls or Bentley or 2, one of the bar owners had an Aston Martin Volante that he would tell me to go put some miles on & grab him a pack of smokes… so I actually did have cars to compare.
I miss the cars… the job (late nights, bar fights, egotistical idiots) not so much.
Pull the motor, exhaust and wheels…scrap the rest.
Every body is a critic
Aug 2 – Gary H
…Dick Ruzick, Ruzick’s Body Shop, Dayton OH was the first in the area to design, build a Corvette wagon in 1974 … he had great vision and good people to pull it off – not to mention custom paint jobs – like he did for me and my ’71 “Corvette … RIP Dick !
The only bummer for me is the lack of photos. I would like to see what is going on a lot more. I love the wheels, sidepipes rear window and door and of course the 454-4speed.
If it were mine I’d build a sub box. Two 15’s firing up and two 10’s firing forward.
You don’t need to eliminate road noise and rattles when you can drown them out.
