The Super Sport is one reason why the Chevy Impala became such as huge seller in the 1960s. It was a limited production car in 1961, evolving into a widespread appearance package after that. It became so popular that the SS was a series of its own from 1964 through 1967. Although almost any drivetrain combination was possible in 1966, this Super Sport has the desirable 396 V8 and 4-speed manual transmission. It looks to have been forgotten for some time and is now ready for someone to bring it back to greatness. From Omaha, Nebraska, this once potent Chevy is available here on craigslist for $8,500. Chevy’s full-size cars were redesigned in 1965 and that platform would be in play through 1970. The ’66 models were modestly changed with the edges being a bit more squared off and the taillights moved out of the deck lid into a panel above the rear bumper. The GM division assembled more than 118,000 Super Sports in 1966, 2-door hardtops, and convertibles. While you could order an Impala SS with an inline-6, why would you do that?
The seller of this car provides no VIN to verify it’s a real-deal Super Sport, but the badging that covers the Chevy – along with a bucket-seat interior – supports that what we see is what we get. The once red paint is faded to almost pink in some places but rust appears to be held at bay (except for the front fenders). The sheet metal is crinkled here and there and the interior will need a makeover. But we’re told the Impala has been stored inside which would have kept the elements from doing any further harm.
Besides the SS designation, the selling points for this car are the 396 V8 and 4-speed, yet no photos or dialogue are provided about them other than “everything’s there.” If you were looking for one of these to restore, this might be a decent candidate to work with, if you assume the price is right. This has the potential of becoming a $40,000 car one day and the seller is an accommodating sort as he/she is winning to accept payment for the deal in cryptocurrency.
Nice find. I was wondering, does it have an engine or transmission? I see a shifter but with the front end setting that high!! I don’t believe any engine is in the car. Could it be on the engine stand? Just checking.
Spoke with him on the phone last night. Original engine is with the car but disassembled but complete. says the pans and trunk are good to boot. fyi
They state “everything’s their”….so I’m guessing everything is there means engine and transmission, no matter which there they use! LOL

I texted the # in the ad, asking for a picture of the engine bay and a picture of the engine deck stamp. He replied with pictures of the title!
I texted back saying, Thanks, but I still need the engine pics. His reply (and I quote) was — “I wish I had a shop at home network but I don’t. thank you anyway”.
What an @$$#@+. If he’s not willing or able to send a picture of the engine, then I suppose everyone should assume there is NOT an engine. Or at least not the original! Or maybe it’s not even his car …
Were you earnestly considering a purchase here or just making the seller go thru some motions?
I have too much else to do to waste my time asking someone questions about a car I have no interest in. So yes, if it had the original born-with engine still in it, I would have been seriously interested in the car.
But even if I wasn’t interested, that would not change the fact that the ad says “everything is their”, but the seller’s response (along with the high nose of the car) suggest that that is probably not true.
