Chevrolet joined the mid-size auto market in 1964 with the Chevelle and the Super Sport would be a big part of these cars. In 1966, the SS 396 was promoted to a series of its own but reverted to option status in 1969. Maybe Chevy saw that the shoe was about to drop on the muscle car market and got a head start though sales were still strong through 1970. This SS 396 looks to have been sitting for some time and parts of the motor are not there, so it doesn’t run either. Located in The Bronx, New York, the Chevy is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $9,400.
RPO code Z25 (aka performance package) cost just $347.60 extra in 1969. That got you the 396 cubic-inch V8 that produced 325 hp, heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, 14 x 7-inch SS wheels with F70-14 tires, and SS badging. It was available on any 2-door model in the Chevelle/Malibu family of intermediates, but the Malibu was the common selection. Of 455,000 Chevelle’s built in 1969, estimates are that 86,300 Chevelle’s were equipped with the (Z25) SS 396 package.
We’re guessing this ’69 Malibu was finished in Marina Blue from the factory and this car maybe still wearing its original paint, though no mention is made of that. There are a few little dents and dings in what we can see of the body, and a bit of rust in at least the passenger side front fender. We’re told the car is all original, including the bucket seat interior, which is complete, but no interior photos are provided.
Under the hood resides a big block 396 engine, but no mention is made as to whether its numbers-matching and the mileage (one million) is a placeholder. The motor should be flanked by a 4-speed manual, but the health of the motor and transmission are unknown. We’re told the engine doesn’t start, but that’s because stuff isn’t all there or hooked up. Online price guides peg the ’69 SS 396 as being worth in at least the mid-five figures as long as the Z25 RPO code can be verified. The limited description and photos provided by the seller don’t show how much work is needed to turn this Chevy into one of those cars.
The seller would benefit if they had included more pics and a better description. Is the seller being purposely vague about the description or just didn’t make the effort? Car appears to be a decent car with what little info there is.
I could be wrong but I don’t think a Chevelle can be a Malibu and an SS at the same time. I’ve seen this site begin referring to SS models as Malibus simultaneously.
Anyone?
I love that the interior in “CUMPLETE”, and all CAPS always catches the eye.
Another over priced project with 50 year old plus rusted GM junk. These cars rotted out by 1978. I know. I love 69 Chevelles, but this one is for someone with deep pockets and excellent restoration skills.
I like it. I would get it running and drive it.
