Stalled Roller: 1973 Dodge Charger Rallye 440

Redesigned in 1971, the Dodge Charger went on to have a record sales year in 1973 (nearly 120,000 units). Part of the demand stemmed from the Charger being the only 2-door Dodge B-body, as the Coronet in that body style had been cut. This ’73 Charger is both a Rallye edition (replacing the R/T) and a roller, as the original engine/transmission has been removed but retained. From a garage in Ramsay, Montana, this stalled project comes with a lot of new, uninstalled parts and is available here on eBay. The current bid is $1,025 with an unmet reserve.

When Chrysler reworked the B-body platform in 1971, Dodge and Plymouth coupes were treated to different styling from sedans and wagons. In the process, the Charger picked up a split grille, a ducktail spoiler, and a rear window that fit the semi-fastback look of the popular automobile. When the 1973 versions arrived, the rear quarter windows became much larger. The R/T was dropped as a separate model, and the Rallye was added as an option, with the 440 also being an extra rather than standard, as with the R/T.

When the seller acquired this Charger Rallye some time back, it wasn’t running. A restoration of the Bright Red painted Mopar began but has since stalled. The factory U-code 440 cubic inch V8 and TorqueFlite automatic were extracted and remain off to the side. We assume the former is rebuildable and comes with the sale. Plan B would be for the buyer also to purchase a fully redone 440 that the seller also happens to have.

Rust is a major problem with both rear quarter panels. The original hood is a mess, but the seller is throwing in a new fiberglass hood and scoop to go with the car. The interior will also need work, and a large cadre of new parts will accompany the Dodge, including carpeting, chrome mirrors, the package tray, and a bunch of other pieces that the seller has photographed. If you are looking for a 1970s Charger to finish and get back in action, could this be the one?
