Stored 13 Years: 1968 Dodge Charger

From its introduction in 1966, the Dodge Charger fit into more than one market niche. It was part personal luxury car, part muscle car, and was for anyone who wanted a larger, sporty coupe. Sales were slow at first but took off when Chrysler redesigned its intermediates for 1968-70. This 1968 edition has a big-block V8 and bucket seats but had a color change and been off the road since 2009. It needs a complete restoration, so the asking price here on eBay gets you a project car. From a dealer in Wylie, Texas, this non-running Dodge is available for $39,800 or the closest offer.

For its first two years, the Charger came across as something of a large “pony car” with its fastback styling and large rear glass. For 1966 and 1967 combined, Dodge sold about 53,000 Chargers. But with the rework in 1968 that coincided with changes to the Coronet and Plymouth’s intermediates, demand for the Charger ballooned to more than 96,000 units. The Dodge Boys would finally have a hit on their hands.

This ’68 Charger comes across as a find from someone’s estate. It hasn’t been on the road for 13 years and the keys are missing. This suggests it may have been “Uncle Ned’s” automobile that was forgotten about for several years. Though it appears to be complete, the car is going to need going through from stem to stern. There has been no attempt to get the 383 cubic-inch Magnum V8 to turn over.

The seller seems optimistic in regards to the condition of the car. While acknowledging there is some rust in the front floorboards, the extensive collection of photos provided suggests there may be more. While it was painted Burgundy Metallic when new, someone (Uncle Ned?) opted to change colors and go with an all-white car. That work may not have been done too well and the paint hasn’t held up at all in the rear panels which may also have some filler in them.

Inside the passenger compartment, there is more white to be found, offset by black carpeting and dashboard. While the upholstery looks okay, the dash and headliner are going to need work at a minimum. This was a well-equipped Charger when new and the car’s broadcast sheet was found to help fill in all the details. For example, the white vinyl top came from the factory and was not an add-on when the color change was made. I’d opt to go back to burgundy on the lower extremities. This Dodge may have a lot of promise, but the asking price is just the starting point for what will become an expensive car to restore.

…funny you should ask. Two years ago, about $20 a gallon, now about $40 a gallon for Bondo, or $60 a gallon for better grade stuff. In some areas it’s hard to find too.

And they must not let Dennis write the ad copy. The term “Holy Grail” is not used.

A bondo bucket. No thanks. And the paint doesn’t even match the white top.

Suggested edit to story: Change “the rear panels which may also have some filler in them” to “filler which may have some rear panels under it”.

That may be a 383 Magnum, but the air cleaner is wrong for the engine (wrong year AND it must have 2 snorkles, 1 (driver’s side) with the vacuum motor and (exhaust manifold) heated air provisions for the Cleaner Air System.

Most Gen 2 Chargers at this stage of their existence (52-54 years of age) are used up. Bullitt, The Dukes of Hazard and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry did no favors for the make, nor year models. It’s a good idea to budget for a wiring harness, floor and trunk pans and rear quarter panels when buying them.

Oh goodie, 40k ??? There may be some metal left in those quarters, frozen engine, what am I forgetting? Oh yeah, 40k!!! Another unbelievable pile for top dollar. I would laugh at 4k for this. I know, I know, 68 charger, big block, etc etc. 100lbs. of bonds, no extra charge. They must be kidding.

Being a former hooligan I’m not understanding the “no keys so we haven’t tried to start it”. That ignition is mounted in the dashboard and the locking portion unplugs and you can buy a new one probably for less than $25 or as I said being a former hooligan take the damn tumbler pins out
