Stored 20 Years: 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Even when the Ford Mustang was still in its infancy, the design team was already planning to give the car a bump up in size.  One objective was to allow for a big block to fit under the hood, which first became a factory option in ’67.  However, the smaller V8s continued to be a popular choice, with this 1968 Ford Mustang here on eBay said to be a factory C-code example.  It’s also a desirable fastback model, and while this one’s a project, I’m thinking there are mostly good bones to work with here.  This sporty pony is in Manahawkin, New Jersey, with the current high bid of $16,500 falling short of the reserve.  Another option is to end the auction early and pay the buy-it-now price of $25,000.

The history provided here goes back 20 years, as that’s how long ago this one was put into storage, with little other prior background information given.  While the body here is a bit rough in a few areas, the good news is that this Mustang seems pretty much complete on the outside, other than a missing windshield wiper, plus the lock and mirror on the driver’s side door.  The sheet metal is not entirely exempt from rust, but exterior corrosion appears to be a relatively minor issue.  With some work, most or perhaps all of the panels may be able to be saved.

Already replaced are the floors, with several shots from the underside seeming to confirm the seller’s report that the frame rails appear good.  The door panels have been removed but are included, although it might be time to install some new ones during the restoration.  A good refresh will also be needed for the dash, along with sourcing a radio.  Some replacement upholstery, followed by a new carpet, should have this one looking a lot better inside.

The C-code indicates a factory 289 with a 2-barrel on top, and while it appears that’s what is under the hood here, the V8 isn’t positively confirmed as the original engine.  The motor is stated to turn over by hand, but the seller has never attempted to start it.  I’m seeing a couple of possibilities here, with the obvious choice being to get this one repaired and close to the factory specs of how it was back in ‘68.  Another idea would be to take the Restomod route and build this one however you want, paint it another color besides green, and install a more hefty powerplant.  What would you do here?

The listing has ended likely meaning sold.

Not a fan of color chosen from factory but these were colors of its vintage.

Hopefully restored but likely a Coyote transplant coming soon to a cars and coffee near you.

I love Mustangs and glad this will get to drive the streets again.

I just have one favor to ask of not repeating the norms… please no bullet McQueen special or Shelby Clone gone in 60 seconds Eleanor .

This has great lines to paint and it will get plenty of street cred with a throaty exhaust and nice wheels plus AC.

A Good project to restore with a 5 liter coyote transplant that will bring him alive with manual transmission! Well good luck with that! Still the price for the carcass is a little of !

$25k just as it sits?? WTF! That’s crazy! Still another $25k to sink in to it. What is going on in the classic car world? $25k you could walk away with a really nice Cougar. To each his own.
