Stored 25 Years: 1962 Chevrolet Impala

Chevrolet built a lot of good-looking automobiles in the 1960s. And they were also some of the industry’s bestsellers. The 1962 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe tops my personal list, an evolution of the styling of the ‘61s, which had (thankfully?) put tailfins to rest. This Impala appears to be a survivor that spent a third of its life in storage in the South. Now in Chicago, Illinois, this largely original machine is available here on eBay for $20,000 OBO.

The 1962 Chevies didn’t quite reach the sales pinnacle of the 1965s (one million+ cars), but probably outsold everything else on the market. A lot of folks were still heeding the advice of Dinah Shore to “See the USA in Your Chevrolet.” Nearly 705,000 Impalas rolled off the assembly lines in 1962 (plus some Bel Airs and Biscaynes), including 269,000 Sport Coupes with the new formal roofline (no more “Bubbletop” Impalas).

While Chevy had a new V8 in the mix in 1962 (the 327), the seller’s car has the more basic 283 cubic incher (up from the inline-6). We gather that this engine and the 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission are numbers matching with an unknown number of miles. No mention is made of the car’s running condition, but it did spend 25 years in storage in a garage in the Tar Heel State. This Impala is sporting a set of Rally wheels from later in the decade.

We’re told the body seems to be rust-free, though what may be the original beige paint is showing its age. The seller has a new hood that’s yet to be painted, but why would you need it if the other isn’t damaged in some way? The interior appears to have factory materials, and a box containing new carpeting is part of the deal. Both bumpers have been rechromed, but why was that necessary if there was no rust? If the Chevy runs okay, why not just get in and go!

Nailed it, Russ. If it runs like it looks, put the air cleaner on and drive it home-better yet, stick to the 2 lanes. Retrace some of Peter Egan’s travels in a classic car made for those classic adventures. Relive the meaning “See The USA In A Chevrolet” ad.

“Bubbltop” C-pillar roofline on these and oesthetics. 60’s G.M. cars is more appealing. I think here chevy was replicating the convertible silhouette.

This is a very clean nice looking one. I would make sure it’s road worthy. Get it professional detailed. And enjoy it. Go to car cruises Chevrolet venues shows etc. Go and add AC system to it so I wont sweat the summer. I know 283 is a reliable motor not powerful and 2 speed automatic is also reliable. I can see others dropping in a 383 stroker turbo 350 trans and upgrade the rearend and of course brakes but why. It’s nice the way it is but, one question… for $20,000 not cheap does it come with the air cleaner system? 🤣

The 1962 Chevrolet is one of my favourites for styling (HATE the “bubble-top” ’61s!), along with the 1953 Mercury, 1953 Chrysler, 1949 Buick, 1939 Buick, and the 1938 Ford Deluxe. I would LOVE to find one of these ’62s in Super Sport trim, all original — INCLUDING THE WHEELS AND HUBCAPS! — low original mileage, never smoked-in, factory air-conditioning, “cherry” condition — and the 283 is just fine, thank you much!

Seams like a steal. It’s as good or better than my all original one and I’ve turned down $25000. I just love this model, very sleek and well styled. Yes the bubble top 62 is the absolute bomb but I’ve never came across a good one I could afford.

My cousin had one same color with a white ragtop 409 4sp SS! It was pretty quick!

I believe there was a Bubbletop in 62, and a 409 would be cool too. I like the Bubbletop look but all that glass you better have AC.
