Stored 27 Years! 1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

If you’re around my age, you remember well the Southern California car culture of the 1990s. Classic convertible Chevrolets with hydraulics ruled the scene and when you heard the lyrics “six-four”, you knew they were talking about a 1964 Impala. Although this one is located in Carlisle, Iowa, this car instantly says to me “California sunshine.” It can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $9,500. As you’ll see the car has been almost completely stripped and is ready for restoration. Take a closer look at this six-four convertible!

The seller says the car originally had a 327 cubic inch V8, but it is long gone. The transmission is still in place, but the condition is unknown. If this was my build, I’d probably try and find a 409 to nestle between the inner fenders, how about you?

As mentioned before, the car is almost completely stripped. You can see they left the dash and steering wheel in place, but everything else has been pulled. The floor pan could use some attention from a Shop-Vac, but other than that, it doesn’t appear to be too bad. The rear seat is still in place, but it will need some attention like the rest of the interior. The seller also mentions they have the original front buckets as well, which is a plus.

The ad says “All trim and vin tags are on car…Comes with most of the original parts.” As you can see from the photo above, there is certainly a lot of parts and pieces to this car. From the photos, it looks like a majority of the parts are usable, but it’s hard to tell for sure. Sourcing NOS or reproduction parts for these cars isn’t too hard, but it can be expensive. Hopefully, most of the original parts will be able to be used with a little cleaning and refurbishing.

As you can see, the car has been pulled out of storage and dusted off. There is quite a bit of rot in the quarter panels. The seller says the car has the “usual rust” but it is “very fixable.” Hopefully, this car will be cruising the streets again sometime in the future. I doubt hydraulics will be the suspension of choice, but maybe the owner will blast some west coast hip hop for old-times sake!

These are great looking cars from front to back when fixed up or never needed to be fixed is better yet. 9500.00 is a lot to me for something to start with. It’s also to much red for me. Back in the 80’s I got a 63 convert, black paint, top and red inside for 35.00 and it had a new top still in the box. Not sure what ever happen to it. I wish it was still sitting in the back yard.

        Frank Sumatra,

You don’t speak jive? just ask Barbara Billingsley [Beaver’s mom on the TV show], she speaks jive, and said so in the movie “Airplane!”

Yes, too much red, and I’d reinstall a 327.

Two door sedan, 409, yes, two door hardtop, maybe. 64 Convertible a 327, yes. 409’s too expensive to buy or build for a cruiser. Agree, too much red.
