Stored 40 Years: 1957 Austin Healey 100-6

Having put a 1959 100-6 very similar to this one back on the road, I can tell you the welded and bolted structure of a Big Healey is one of the more complex in the classic car world. I’m surprised at how solid this one looks, although it does certainly need some repair. It’s been stored for 40 years, but is now up for sale here on eBay. Bidding is rising quickly and is at $6,655 as I write. It’s located in Montague, New Jersey.

Based on the motley collection of colors, I’m guessing that some of the panels have been replaced with better ones. The only description we have apart from the pictures is that it’s real solid with good floors and chassis. The 100-4, 100-6 and 3000 have an unusual way of corroding–the center shrouds are aluminum, but the fenders are steel, so electrolytic corrosion takes place between the two where they are bolted together. This car looks pretty good at the interfaces, but I’d want to see some detailed pictures to make sure.

Believe it or not, those tractor seat look-alikes are what passes for a rear seat in the 4-up Big Healeys. I had one in college and let me tell you, the occupants of those seats had better be small. Really small. Lisa, my future wife’s roommate, used to sit there going to football games, and even though she was short and probably weighed 80 pounds soaking wet she had to sit crossways just to get her legs in. I don’t see a whole lot of serious rust here, though, which is good news.

The fact that there are floor boards here at all is a plus, and they do look very solid. I’d like to see some close ups of the sills and under the body before I even thought about pulling the trigger. We don’t have any engine pictures either, but the seller tells us it’s free. I wonder what took the car off the road in the first place, and what happened to the missing parts?

Well it’s cheap…so far….but it will need LOTS of parts and work. It’s about as easy to say what’s there as what’s missing. Needs hood, interior, instruments, windshield, lights, carbs and probably more since there’s no proper engine bay shot. And then there is the fact that these ’57s had the intake log built into the head, with IIRC the least power of any of the Big Healeys.

I can see why it’s on Ebay instead of being restored in the shop. And it’s unusual for there to be sharp, well lit photos from a professional seller that show so little. And with all the Brit sports car parts the seller lists for sale Ebay, I wonder what happened to all the parts that are missing from this Healey…..

Dunno, but I like the MG TF in the background.

My buddy has built one ala resto-modded, which is what I would do to it if it is was in my price range. His has mustang II front suspension, 9 inch ford rear and is powered by a really heathy 327 cu in chevy backed by a four speed, Needless to say it is fast, he has the center sections polished with the patina’d fenders ,doors and rear fenders re-installed. It is a unique look but it somehow works and looks really good….great sleeper, If I only could hit the lotto !
here’s a pic of it at the hotel during our trip to the 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise, yup he drove it 900 miles no roof or side windows…that’s my Challenger RT parked next to it…
