Stored For 30 Years: 1968 Pontiac GTO

This once magnificent 1968 Pontiac GTO has definitely seen better days, but it is worth taking a look to see whether it can be returned to its former glory. You will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Wayland, Michigan, it is being offered for sale with a clean title. The owner has set the price for this GTO at $4,000. Barn Finder Ikey H has located this GTO for us, so thank you for that Ikey.

So. let’s talk about rust because there is quite a bit to discuss on that subject. All of the floors are going to need replacing, along with the quarter panels. There is also rust in the rockers and both lower fenders. The trunk lid also has rust, and the seller doesn’t mention the state of the frame. However, from all of this doom and gloom there just has to be a positive. There is minimal rust in the doors, and the window frames also seem to be clear of issues. As far as the exterior trim is concerned, it is a case of what you see is what you get. As far as glass is concerned, the passenger side vent has been broken, and the windshield is badly cracked.

This shot gives you more of a view of the rust in the floors and the fact that large parts of the interior are just as sad as the body. However, the seats look really good, with just a single seam separation on the driver’s seat to address. The rest of the interior appears to be present, but most of the items will require restoration or replacement. The floor console is complete, and while the lid will require reupholstering, the console itself looks to be in good order.

The seller describes the engine and transmission as being all original parts, so I assume that he means that this is a numbers matching car. The engine is the 400ci V8 which is backed by an automatic transmission. I know how many of our readers love the line “ran when parked.” Well, this one did, but that was 30 years ago, and it probably isn’t a surprise that it doesn’t run now. The owner doesn’t indicate whether the engine even turns freely, so that’s an unknown quantity.

Man, this GTO represents a major restoration project for the new owner. Either that, or we’re looking at a parts car. For me, the great unknown factors to consider are the state of the frame and the state of the engine. With question marks hanging over both, the car’s viability is also unknown. So what do you think Barn Finders?

Wow! This won’t last at that price. A lot of work and metal repair, but for 4k, there is room to fix this one!

Daylite Peaking thru the floor~ Price doesn’t seem too bad for a car this complete. Lots of work tho. Good luck to the new owner.

    Cheers

Lots of grinding and welding required, but at $4k, that’s not unreasonable (I’d try to argue down, though). Rust on the dash is never a good sign…

Myself I would rather look the 69 GTO in Lathrop over personally and if it’s not totally shot rust wise make him a offer of 8K and tackle it over this one. The only thing going for this one is the console and his & hers shifter.

So, where exactly did Fred and Barney park this car for 30 years?!!! My guess is in a shallow pond, half way up the wheels in a desert. Not sure how you get that much rust on the bottom and that much sun damage on the top???

    BACK SEAT IS AWESOME !!!!!

$4K is the right money but it will still take far more money to get the car right, like twice as much as it will be worth when done. Especially without a 4 sp.

As I have said before, this is a car you keep and one day where there are NO more to buy reasonably, you break out this one and restore it or sell it for a resto when there are not many good options available. my 2 cents.

Well,…at least this seller is a bit more realistic about it and not looking for $20K or something rediculace for it.

I don’t miss seeing these in this condition. I remember in the 80’s 68/69 GTO’s looking exactly like this while still being beat on in the rust belt.

This is one of those put away during that time frame but instead of $350. it is now $4000. No thanks on a luke warm performer when new and needing everything now.

I’m scratching my head with these cars. There seems to be an abundance of all these old cars getting dragged out of sheds and people’s yards yet the prices are ridiculous. Are we as people that stupid to keep paying huge money for junk that quite obviously isn’t rare. I personally don’t think the scrappys crushed as many old muscle cars as what we think. They’re all rusted out in sheds and barns.
Quite comical to sit back and watch really

Sadly, 4K is a good buy. I sold my 70 Judge in 1983 for $1000. My 66 fetched me $400 in 1979. Both running and driving.
