Stored For Years: 1985 Chrysler Laser

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This Chrysler Laser had been sitting for a number of years, but it is now out of storage, it runs and drives, and it could be yours for $3,450. You will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist. The Laser is located in Holland, Michigan, and has been listed with a clean title.

The seller states that the Laser has only covered just under 52,000 miles. Certainly, the overall condition of the car makes this claim seem feasible, but I would hope that the seller has some evidence to back this. The body looks to be straight, and there are no obvious issues with rust. The bumpers and external trim have also stood up well.

The interior looks to be in good order and things like the lack of wear on either the seats or the wheel also make the mileage claim plausible. Interior plastic trim technology has come along in leaps and bounds since the 1980s, and I think that all of us have probably seen cars from that era where the plastic is crumbling before our eyes. This  Laser seems to have all of the trim intact and in good order. This suggests that the car hasn’t been punished overly by UV rays, which is also a positive sign.

There are no shots of the engine, but when the car was removed from storage, the seller went through and did all of the usual maintenance that you would do in this situation. They then fitted a new battery and the car fired right up. The engine is the 2.2l 4-cylinder engine which is coupled to a 3-speed automatic transmission. That combination is not going to set your pulse racing, but it might be okay for a commuter vehicle or a daily driver.

The Chrysler Laser was not a sales success, and its life only stretched across three model years. This one looks to be a clean example that could be added to a classics collection, or could just as easily be a commuter vehicle or a slightly unusual daily driver.

My college friend had one of these. They are unbelievably slow. In fact, it was probably one of the most underpowered vehicles I’ve ever driven.

It’s a commuter car, not a race car.

Are you sure it was a Laser not a Turismo those could be had with a Peugot 1.6 that was very slow…This year of Laser with the 2.2 wasnt really that slow 10 second 0-60 …Turbo would run mid 7’s to 8 sec flat depending on test conditions..

I owned a non turbo Laser it wasnt that slow for the era…Sure it wasnt my 440 Cuda (11.63@127 mph mild 440 cam/head work with 2.94 axle for highway cruising)The Laser really wasnt that bad,0-50 mph wasnt bad 50-60 slowed down but meh…I used to pass new Honda’s,new Toyota’s and other new Ford/GM cars going up the Rocky Mountains to my parents cabin back in 1985-1988..Sure some passed me but overall a nice daily comuter that got 41 mpg highway driven normally !

A Buddy had a new 1986 Turbo Daytona and he ran 14.70’s with it 2.2 Turbo and a 5 speed with only a Mopar Computer added it shaved nearly 1 second off his 1/4 mile time..New he ran 15.80 – 16 flat depending on traction if you gave it some rpm’s it boiled the tires off the line as the turbo would kick in..Testers in magazines then went off idle and the turbl lag was until 15 mph then it kicked in and hold on lol..
