Stored Since ’99: 1973 Dodge Charger Brougham SE

The staging on this 1973 Dodge Charger looks too good to be true, but the seller does acknowledge it was in storage since 1999. Despite its racy exterior, this is the more luxury and convenience oriented “Brougham SE” trim, and it’s equipped with a 318 and 727 automatic transmission. It looks like a fairly straight example with modest rust to address. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $4K and no reserve.

The seller says the Charger runs excellent and the brakes work, but that it could still use a tune-up. It’s a fairly well-equipped example, with air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Overall, the rust is said to be limited to the trunk lid and what sounds like a few soft spots in the floors. The colors and graphics are period correct for sure, but the seller doesn’t confirm if it’s original.

Again, this was not the high-performance spec, so the interior offers some generous (and likely comfortable) cloth bucket seats with a console in the middle. The dash appears to have a woodgrain inlay and looks surprisingly crack-free. Carpets present well, too, and the overall feeling of the interior is one that’s preserved and was loved before the Charger went into storage.

The seller says the engine bay presents as in stock condition, and I don’t disagree with him there. This is one of the better “barn find” engine compartments I’ve seen lately, looking very neat and OE-correct. The Charger will never be the most desirable example out there, but it should be an easy car to improve slightly and enjoy for many more miles.

Fortunately for anyone who likes these, they can update the suspension to something more responsive with today’s technology

In 1980 I was looking for a car. One of my friends told me his Aunt was selling her car and I should check it out. It was a 1973 Charger SE, 318, 727. Color was something like Burnt Orange. It might’ve been only 7 years old, but they were New England years and the salt had already taken its toll. Other than some rust in the lower quarters and wheel wells it was in great looking condition. She was asking $1,000, but because I was friends with her nephew, she said I could have it for $700! Wow! A beautiful Charger for $700!!! I was deep in the throws of teen Lust. I could see myself cruising the countryside like Bo and Luke (hey, I was young) with Daisy Duke by my side (hey, I’m a guy)! I wanted this car bad and I had just enough money to buy her.

Being that I was young and fairly inexperienced when it came to cars, I was encouraged to bring it to the only service station in town to look it over. I’m from a very small town (think Mayberry) and had known these guys since forever. Knowing my very limited financial resources, they strongly advised me not to purchase the car. Sadly, I couldn’t risk spending all my money on a risky car, so I passed.

In retrospect, I think I made the right decision, but nearly 4 decades later I still think about that car. Not that the ’73 is an especially gorgeous design (no offense intended to anyone), but it would have been my first ‘cool’ car.

Three weeks later I bought a 1968 Malibu (327) from another friend for $75.00, but that’s another story.

Look out paint on front a different colour shade than rear.

    Accident victim ?

Stripes are bogus. No Charger had this type of stripes

Eventhough I like the big-butt dusters of the same era, I was never a fan of this design. Crazy snouts, bubble stance, must feel like driving a lumbering hole.
However, IF one ever fell into my hands, it is screaming “Cragar” upgrade (Super Sports?) that I grew up with.

    I like the color.

This looks like an easy car to bring back to nice condition, if you think it is worth it.

I don’t think 2 door Coronets are worth all that much.

I have owned this car now for.over 2 years.
Done tons of cosmetic, and mechanicals to it. Love it.
