Summer Special: 1992 Ford Mustang LX Convertible

Cheap and cheerful is very much a thing when it comes to project cars, and this 1992 Ford Mustang LX convertible is a great example of this phenomenon. It’s far from pristine and its originality was thrown out the window ages ago, but it is a 5-speed manual GT with the 5.0L V8 under the hood. The Mustang has been repainted, and I’m sure the details are rough in some areas. There are plenty of things to fix, and the seller suspects the transmission has also been converted from an automatic to the present manual. You’ll never win the preservation class, but who cares? It’s a V8 droptop for not a lot of money. Find the Mustang here on eBay for $8,999 or best offer.

Now, this Mustang was not built completely randomly. It was meant to be a tribute car of sorts, replicating the “Feature” models painted in monochromatic yellow or white paint. They were also known as the “Summer” edition, and as we can see here, the respray went deep into the engine bay, getting in those tight-to-reach spaces. It’s impossible to tell whether the paint job is a high-quality respray, and the seller highlights some flaws like chips by the rear spoiler and driver’s door. The Mustang is said to run and drive, but it does have some mechanical issues that will need to be sorted given it randomly stalls out at times.

The interior was also swapped to a handsome black cabin, and the seats appear to be in excellent condition. The original color scheme isn’t divulged, other than noting the exterior was originally red. While many collectors will shy away from this car because of the myriad changes, it’s hard to deny they didn’t all add some additional value to the car – so for the collector who doesn’t need to go to Barrett-Jackson next month, this Mustang represents a ton of value for the money. The V8, five-speed manual, clean interior, and eye-catching exterior really do make this a potentially smart pickup for the Fox body fanatic.

The underside picture shows a very clean chassis with no apparent rust or rot. The seller doesn’t cite any other rust issues other than to confirm that the shock towers are solid, but also notes he’s not aware of every last detail about this Mustang’s mechanical history. For instance, there’s an aftermarket cam installed, but the manufacturer and specs are unknown. The true mileage is also a mystery, and the top is in need of replacement. As a bonus, the air conditioning still works. Overall, this is an interesting opportunity to get into a Fox platform Mustang wearing unique colors with the desirable combination of the 5.0L V8 and a manual gearbox – especially if the seller accepts a lower offer.

Jeff, reading the headline, I was ready to correct you by saying the yellow Feature Cars were 1993’s. (I have several friends who have or had Feature Cars.) Then I read the article and realized this is a tribute car, of sorts. Kind of interesting someone would do that, but no doubt the yellow paint is eye-catching. Sounds like this one needs some sorting out, but it does look like a pretty good example. An opportunity to get into the hot Fox Body market fairly cheap?

Rather see the luggage 🧳 rack on the trunk than the spoiler.

Wow, I paid that for my 89 GT convertible in 91 and it was super fresh and never stalled.
