Sundance Yellow: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The first Pontiac Trans Am only came in one color, white with blue stripes. As the years moved on, Pontiac offered more vibrant options including Lucerne Blue, Brewster Green and even Sundance Yellow. There were very few Code 51 Sundance Yellow Trans Ams built in 1979.  I owned one in high school and never thought I would own a yellow Trans Am but, once I saw it, I fell in love with this unique color. This car is listed here on Craigslist. The Trans Am is located near Chicago, Illinois and is listed at an asking price of $35,0000. The car has been listed for three days.

The car looks very clean with very little wear. The odometer reads just over 66,000 miles. The car is equipped with a beautiful tan deluxe interior which is evident by the hobnail cloth seats and upgraded door panels. Based on the black stopper on the door sill, the car looks like it received a Ziebart application at some point in its life. The seller states that the car is equipped with the factory WS6 suspension which improved the handling of the car. The T-tops are said to be scratch free and the tires are relatively new.

Of the 117,000 Trans Ams built in 1979, most of the cars left the factory with the 185 horsepower 403 cubic inch V8 engine which only came with an automatic transmission. If you wanted a 4 speed, you could order a 150 horsepower 301 cubic inch V8 or a 220 horsepower 400 cubic inch V8 engine. The latter was designated the W72 engine which was developed in 1977 and the designation was changed to L78 in 1979. This change tricks some enthusiasts into believing the 1979 400 cubic inch engine was not a W72 engine but it was a simple nomenclature change on the build sheet. All 1979 L78/W72 engines were built in 1978 and stockpiled for installation in 1979.

The car looks great in the pictures. It appears the front wheel lost its cap on the way to take pictures. The seller states that a 3:42 rear gear ratio was installed on the car. This should really help because the factory gearing on these cars ranged from 2:41 to 2:82 ratios. An aftermarket stereo has been added and the car was repainted in its original color recently. The buyer also discloses that the engine was rebuilt and looks fresh in the engine compartment.

I guess 35K is the new 10K. It’s a nice TA, but not worth that much money. IMO.

3.42 may be a bit steep for long hwy drives , no O/D on these autoloaders.

I agree. The price is too high. You could also get a gold bird on a Sundance Yellow Trans Am. More subtle. That is what I had

Just curious why you feel that an engine with 43 year old rings, bearings and valve springs would be advantageous over a freshened up engine?

My view is that at 60k miles it doesn’t need a rebuild if it had regular oil changes

You’d prefer a blue or maroon interior with a yellow car?

        My personal choice is black
Blue would be nice but not with a yellow car
Maroon goes with a lot of colors but shocks me with yellow

I have had a few cars with ugly beige interiors and i died the leather to red , the first buyer jumped and paid for my black /black red bmw M

A friend of mine was a dealer and he bought a sight unseen 99 boxster , it arrived with the ugly yellow shade and a snot green interior
Needless to say that he lost on that one !

I wouldn’t touch one of these underpowered slugs unless they were practically giving it away and I thought I could make money on it. A glorified Camaro with one of the lamest (second only to the 307) Oldsmobile engines ever slapped together during the golden age of crappy cars.

If you wanted to go fast in 1979, you had to buy a Li’l Red Express. If you think about it, most everything was underpowered in 1979. On a more positive note, the 79 T/A was Car& Driver’s best handling American made car and was a blast to drive. In fact, they’re still great driving cars and with just a little tinkering you can really crank up the performance of the 400. You can thank Burt for driving up the price on these “speedy” cars.

Remember, 35K is the asking price, what they will take may be a different story. When I bought my Vette, the asking price was 18K, I got it for 11K.
If the bid on Ebay was at 35K, then people have lost there mind.

yellow was meant for only 1 vehicle and it takes kids to school.

Well , i use to share your view, always had regular colors , white, blue, black, silver , wanted red but timing was never there…

As i got older, wiser and more confortable ; i bought red cars and when i first saw the speed yellow 2003 porsche boxster i was hooked !

I do agree that certain colors don’t fit certain cars and tastes vary but they also change with time , as we are ever changing beings !
