Super Sport Project: 1962 Chevrolet Impala

While Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport package on the Impala in 1961, the concept didn’t take off with buyers until 1962. From a few hundred copies in 1961, sales were just shy of 100,000 units in 1962. Besides special SS trim, the Impala Super Sport also came with bucket seats and any engine in the Chevy mix. We’re told this ’62 SS is a barn find, but little additional information is imparted. Now in a garage in Cheyenne, Wyoming, this Sport Coupe project is available here on eBay, where the current bid is $5,200 (no reserve).

Impala SS sales continued their sales growth curve in 1963, so Chevy promoted it to a series of its own in 1964. But after peaking in 1965, demand would quickly fall off as buyers preferred the SS in a smaller package, the mid-size Chevelle that debuted in 1964. The Super Sport stayed on the books through the end of the decade and then disappeared on the Impala going into the 1970s. While most Impala SSs were 2-door hardtops, convertibles were available as well.

The seller’s listing must have been written by AI, as it doesn’t really jive with what we see in the limited photos the seller makes available. We don’t know what the “striking” red interior looks like, and the exterior paint is a badly faded maroon or maybe old red primer. The body may be okay, but it looks like there could be some front-end damage, or at least some missing pieces.

A V8 resides under the hood of this Chevy, but is it a 283, a 327 (which was new in 1962), or something else? Since it has a “sleek” automatic transmission, wouldn’t that be a 2-speed Powerglide? While the Impala comes with a clean title, we don’t know for sure how many miles are on the vintage beast (we’re told 99999, which is likely a placeholder). Based on the presentation, is this a project that you would take a crack at?

    Those exterior photos don’t show much, and seller was too lazy to open a door or write a proper description?(His other listing for a 1941 Chevrolet sedan describes it as a “classic SUV”). Was surprised that such a poor presentation garnered any bids at all–then saw who the bidders are.

    I’m guessing a 327–after all, it has a 4-barral carb -and- somebody went to a lot of trouble on the fabricated valve cover to emphasize that.

      If you look closely at the last picture you can see the top of the insignia indicating it is a 327 on the left front fender.

        Yup, Crossed flags indicate either a 327 or a 409. Back in the day it was important to know these things. Saturday night cruising in Bob’s grandma’s new ’63 Impala with the windows down and riding shotgun,we were stopped at a red light with another car next to us. Perfect time for a green light drag. Then I heard the other driver say to his passenger “Uh Oh, it’s a 327”. That ended the tension & the race. :-) Terry J

        yes looks like 327 sign with flags on 409s had flags and numbers 409 above the flag and of course 409 had w value covers as on the great 348 I love my 348s

    As Russ said, special chrome was included on the ’62 SS and although it shows SS badges ahead of the Impala script on the rear quarters, none of the chrome trim is actual SS trim with the machined spirals in it. I’m calling imposter on the SS claim.

    Although the side trim has painted inserts which was spart of a standard Impala, the original machine turned inserts did sometimes fall out and were replaced with paint. It does have bucket seats ~ would be a good idea to show pix of the interior. He doesn’t list the VIN, which would tell us if it’s a true SS.

      Agreed, The VIN would tell all, however the entire rear chrome around the tail lights etc. should be machined as well and it isn’t. And the dashboard chrome while were at it. Still makes me cry Imposter.

    Also, if an interior pic was shown, a grab bar in front of the passenger seat would indicate a true SS.

      Those can be added too. I’ve had mine off & they only require a couple of holes to mount. The VIN is the only real tell.
