Supercharged Project: 1989 Ford Mustang LX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We see an awful lot of stalled project cars on these pages but this one stands out for a few different reasons. This is a 1989 Ford Mustang LX convertible equipped with the venerable 5.0L V8 engine and preferred 5-speed manual, but things get interesting when you learn it has a Paxton supercharger under the hood. Although it’s looking a bit sad sitting here in a parking lot littered with commercial vehicles, the seller claims this stalled project is laser-straight and that it ran when parked. Interestingly, the tires are brand new with manufacturer labels still attached. Find it here on eBay with bids to $1,125 and the reserve unmet.

There’s just so many things going on here. A very hair dresser-friendly spec, this black convertible with a white top and corresponding interior isn’t what you’d pick out for a street fighter build. The fact that the tires are still new with the stickers hanging off of them suggests this Mustang was in someone’s garage, waiting for the road, before the project stopped in its tracks. The only real flaw he notes on the outside is that the top below the back window is torn, so a new top will be needed. I’d go with a black top this time around, but that’s me; and honestly, the white convertible roof gives it total sleeper vibes.

The interior appears to be quite nice, with seats that definitely appear to have been redone at some point and door panels that sport a custom upholstery pattern. Given the seller has a Buy-It-Now of $11,500, I’m guessing this Mustang presents better in person than it does here because it seems to have some restoration work already done and the performance upgrades are obviously a meaningful upgrade. In addition, those new tires are wrapped around what appear to be OEM Cobra wheels. However, when you look at the hood, it’s clearly seen better days and could suggest this Mustang sat outside for a spell.

The Paxton supercharger is a surprise, and isn’t exactly something you throw on a casual project car. According to a few different websites, the kit bumps horsepower on the 5.0L V8 to a very respectable 328 b.h.p. and 358 lb.-ft. of torque. As it sits, this Mustang is a non-running project with some nice upgrades, good colors, and great factory equipment. The seller may be a bit ambitious with the asking price but I’m sure there’s a sale price between the Buy-It-Now and the current bid that will work for all parties and leaves plenty of upside for whoever gets it back on the road.

Good analysis Jeff. I agree, this might be a good starting point. Paxton, 5-speed, new tires are plusses. That three-tone interior doesn’t look bad. Obviously needs paint, new headlights, etc., but if the mechanicals are in reasonable shape it might be worth the effort.

Intriguing Mustang. I don’t think I ever saw an interior color scheme like that, is it factory? I would think a black car would have an all red interior. Or if it’s white the door panels and console/armrest would be all white too. Since it needs a repaint anyway I would do it all in white like Vanilla Ice, ice, baby. Not a fifteen thousand dollar car.

If it could be gotten for 8K, strip it for FFR FIA cobra project.

The BIN is way overpriced. There is too much potential downside to justify the asking price. Most supercharged 5.0 Mustangs led a rough life, the seller is the one that needs to absorb any downside risk of a non-running project. The Cobra wheels are nice, but how long have the tires been installed, then left sitting outside. What modifications, if any have been done to the engine? Is it otherwise stock, does it have cam, aftermarket heads, srtroker long block? None of that is addressed. Figure an oxidized complete supercharger kit from a non-running car is worth about $1,500 to $2,000 on the secondary market, then whatever a roller 5.0 convertible. That shouldn’t be anywhere close to $10,000.

If I could get it for 8K, I’d strip it, use the drivetrain for FFR 289 FIA Cobra and sell the supercharger

Would have been easier to drop in a built 351 Cleveland. Supercharging a standard engine is a recipe for disaster. No wonder it won’t run. Run I would, far away from this. Far far away.

Does Supercharging put to much stress on factory 302?

I was told from my old 5.0 nitrous days the factory rod bolts are only good to 400hp.
