Survivor-Grade: 1985 Toyota Pickup XtraCab 4×4

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Toyota pickups from the 1980s have never been more sought-after, and the seller of this 1985 Toyota XtraCab SR5 is offering exactly the kind of example fans of the era dream of owning. Listed on eBay, this truck is described as “original bone stock” and carries several details that collectors specifically look for. According to the seller, it’s the combination enthusiasts tend to chase: a 22RE fuel-injected four-cylinder, a five-speed manual, straight-axle four-wheel drive, and a factory sunroof — all features that made the 1985 model year unique.

The seller purchased the truck a year ago and reports that it has lived its entire life in the Southeast, originally sold new in Georgia. With 205,000 miles, this Toyota has clearly been used, but the seller says it runs smoothly and has been dependable for weekend driving. It comes with a clean title, though the seller notes that Alabama considers vehicles over 35 years old to be title-exempt; the original title from the previous owner is included along with the current registration.

According to the listing, everything on the truck is original except for the radio, and the interior is described as being in excellent condition. The power windows and factory sunroof are said to operate correctly, and the dashboard is reportedly free of cracks. The seller states that the truck received a repaint in 2018 due to fading, but that it has never been wrecked. They also mention that the undercarriage has never been sprayed and remains in its original raw-metal condition.

Mechanically, the truck sounds well cared for. The listing notes ice-cold air conditioning, new tires, and a new muffler. The 22RE engine is one of Toyota’s most beloved powerplants, and the seller emphasizes how exceptionally nice this particular example is for its age.

While the truck is being sold “as is” and the buyer is responsible for shipping or pickup, the seller does offer to help arrange transport if needed. A $1,000 deposit is required at auction end.

For fans of classic Toyota pickups — and for anyone who has ever quoted Back to the Future at the sight of one — this 1985 XtraCab checks all the right boxes. Trucks in this condition are getting harder to find every year, and this one appears to offer the desirable combination of originality, regional history, and careful long-term ownership.

Would you preserve this truck as-is or slowly upgrade it for modern adventures?

Whenever I see a truck like this I’m reminded of the line: “Marty did you sleep in your clothes again?” Where’s Huey Lewis? You just need a silver DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor to round out the ensemble.

The truck itself was OK although when this came out I still had a bad taste in my mouth over the ’71 HiLux I had years before. Toyota obviously fixed the problems because I knew a lot of people who bought trucks like this and worked them hard. I’ve worked on some and the engine really isn’t a lot different from the 8RC that powered that POS I owned. The newer ones certainly ran better…

I owned the same truck in the late 80″s only silver, great truck , 27 mpg on the highway .
Horrible ride with leaf springs on all four corners. When your young you can put up with concrete expansion joints, but at 68 , NOPE. I’d prefer the 1986 or 1987 model with the Turbo option. Good times back in the 80’s. Bought my first house , had a beautiful girlfriend . Both are long gone.

I’m amazed at what it’s bid up to. I owned a new ’84 with 7 foot bed and solid front axle, great truck, really hauled weight without sagging. I had a well used ’94 after my ’84 rusted to oblivion after 24 years with the independent front suspension which I hated, truck would sag too much, and the A frames rotted out on IT! Had to replace one after it ripped apart. Never would happen with the good old solid axle truck.

Funny just the other day one of my buddies that bought one of these 4×4’s new in the early 80’s asked what I thought a good one would cost….he as well as a few work buddies bought these new and pounded them pretty much and they all held up well….my biddy sold his many years later for pretty close to whet he paid for it.

I had a 85 std model, but it did not have fuel injection, but it was a good truck. I beat the snot out of it. Sadly like most of that era the bed rusted away. And lastly the 22 R engine was like a old small block Chevy, with regular service it would run forever.
