Survivor Saab: 1969 Saab 96

1969 Saab 96 Survivor

It is a shame that GM destroyed such a innovative manufacturer. Saab always tried to do things a little different and this 1969 Saab 96 showcases some of that thinking. This car is a survivor located in Santa Anna California. It is currently for sale on eBay with no reserve and about four days left.

The styling of these cars has really grown on us because it is unlike anything else on the road. It may be an acquired taste, but you have to admit that it’s unique. The seller of this car claims that this is the factory paint. We love cars with original paint because they cannot be hiding any bad repair jobs underneath. This car has had a few small repairs here and there, but appears to all be original.

The listing states that this car runs and drives well. It is equipped with the Ford V4 and column shifted four speed transmission. These cars seem to be undervalued considering their uniqueness, relative rarity, and rally heritage.

Erik Carlsson helped put Saab on the racing map. He campaigned 93s and 96s extensively and racked up many victories including wins at Monte Carlo and Akropolis. Even though the engine was small he was able to carry speed through the corners by taking advantage of the freewheel and by not using his brakes. We hope someone picks this car up and runs it in a few modern day road rallies where it belongs. We only wish we could still order parts from the factory’s Sport & Rally catalog!

Here is a great video about the 96 and its racing history. Enjoy!

“On the roof Carlsson.” Roll the SAAB back over and drive right back in the race. I have owned 4 900s, an `84 S, `85 Turbo, my favorite a 1986 SPG that I kept 11 years and a `92 Turbo cvt. oh! and a 1986 9000 Turbo. The SPG saved my life. Sadly it was totaled on a dark rain soaked night on an Interstate, right after I had the body stripped and repainted, clutch and trans rebuilt and new turbo charger. It had over 200K miles and was the best, most versatile, enjoyable car. It also had the coolest colored light graphic equalizer ever put in a car.General Motors destroyed the US auto industry let alone SAAB. They helped kill the US independents and then the American auto reputation in the `70s and `80s.
