Survivor SUV: 1989 Dodge Ramcharger LE 4×4

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Among the rugged full-size SUVs of the late 1980s, the Dodge Ramcharger has always stood a little apart. Competing with the Ford Bronco, Chevrolet K5 Blazer, and GMC Jimmy, Dodge’s big two-door 4×4 never sold in quite the same numbers, but today that makes a clean survivor like this 1989 Dodge Ramcharger LE even more appealing. Currently listed here on eBay, this truck presents as an all-original, rust-free example of Dodge’s top trim level, the Luxury Edition, and it looks ready for both collector display and weekend use.

The seller states that this truck is believed to show just 99,000 original miles, noting that the Autocheck misinterpreted its five-digit odometer as six-digit. The overall condition seems to support the claim, with original details like the pedals, steering wheel, armrests, and shifter all showing minimal wear. As equipped, this Ramcharger is powered by Dodge’s stout 5.9-liter (360ci) V8 with throttle-body fuel injection, paired with an automatic transmission and 4×4 system that the seller reports engages smoothly.

Outside, the truck is described as completely rust-free, with its original trim, moldings, and badges still intact. The body appears straight with no major dents or damage, and the doors and tailgate open and close smoothly without sagging. The seller notes that all mirrors are intact and straight, and the overall presentation is consistent with a well-preserved survivor rather than a heavily used work truck.

The LE Luxury Edition trim brought extra comfort and convenience to Dodge’s big SUV, and this example still has its power windows and locks in working order. The dash is clean and crack-free, the seats and carpet are in excellent shape, and even the knobs and switchgear retain their original lettering — rare for a truck of this age. A factory tow package is included, and the seller emphasizes how tight the hinges and strikers remain, lending the doors a solid close.

Mechanically, the Ramcharger is said to run and drive excellent, starting right up with no smoke, leaks, or hesitation. The motor and transmission are reported as strong and reliable, and while the air conditioning system is intact, it currently does not blow cold. Wheels, tires, and trim all present well, giving the truck an authentic period look that hasn’t been compromised by aftermarket modifications.

It’s not often you come across a Ramcharger this original and this clean. Most have long since rusted out, been heavily modified, or worked into the ground, but this survivor retains its factory appeal and desirable Luxury Edition trim. For collectors of vintage SUVs or anyone looking for a solid, classic 4×4 that still has years of life left, this Dodge stands tall as a rare opportunity.

Would you keep this Ramcharger as a preserved survivor, or would you outfit it for backcountry adventure duty?

If I were to have walked into a Dodge showroom back in ’89 looking to buy a Ramcharger, this is what I would have wanted. ( However all I could afford was a base model with steel wheels and a rubber floor mat). The colors the interior, everything about it. And especially the 360 as well. I had a chance to drive one with a 360 and there is a noticeable difference over the 318. Very nicely preserved. Doesn’t look at all like it has that many miles on it either

I’d love to have a Bronco, Blazer or Ramcharger in the garage

A year or so ago if this had been a blazer or bronco in this condition it would bring twice what the ram would. Slowly the ram is catching up.

Very nice vehicle but I’d warn anyone about this era of 1989-1991 Mopars because of Mopar’s SBEC (Single Board Engine Controller), ie computer.
They are now considered to be nearly unobtanium. I found one business that could rebuild for a tad over $400 but one would have to relinquish the SBEC to them and hope it is not lost in the mail, damaged by the re-builder, or unable to be restored. If any of these occur, your 1989-1991 Dodge turns into a nice 4000 pound 4 wheel paper weight. Oh, then try to find anyone with a MOPAR DRBII scan tool, also unobtainium or $$$$. These early vehicles were OBD1 and it is difficult to find a mechanic who will touch them.
Used controllers can be found on some web sites but the specific SBEC has to be identical. Good luck with that.
I’d suggest purchasing a year or two before these early computers or just stick with a later model where parts are still available. Oh and don’t forget the unobtanium fuel pumps, TBI injectors, and on and on.
    Ask me how I know.
    Do your research before buying!

Scott Harvey’s (Chrysler R&D) “Rhino” sure was impressive with the Petty enterprises engine in it. Short lived, but impressive.
