Sweet Squarebody: 1977 GMC Jimmy

We all know and love the classic Chevrolet K5 Blazer; that much is true. However, there’s an interesting subset of this model which is often perceived as being a highly-capable 4WD machine. The 2WD version is equally as sought after but for seemingly much different reasons. As you can see by looking at this baby blue 1977 GMC Jimmy listed here on eBay, it’s been lowered significantly to the point that its belly is practically on the ground. As a lowrider, the 2WD Jimmy/Blazer appeals to a completely different audience, and this one is listed for $39,900 or best offer.

Now, I will personally never understand the point of lowering a vehicle that was originally sold as a truck with decent factory ride height. But perhaps that’s the appeal for the disciples of the 2WD truck crowd, as the irony of lowering a vehicle intended for off-road use makes a rig like this an instant conversation starter. And I suppose if a 2WD Jimmy wouldn’t do you much good off-road, why not slam the thing down to the ground? The seller notes the lowering kit consists of drop shackles and aftermarket springs and that the work was done prior to him taking ownership of the Jimmy. Would you revert it back to stock or leave as-is?

Ride height aside, this Jimmy comes with some tasteful upgrades like this epic tartan interior. The seller notes this isn’t reproduction grade material, either, confirming that it is new old stock cloth apparently sourced from some forgotten upholstery shop attic. It looks phenomenal, as do the carpets (which are new) and the hardtop glass and headliner. The listing goes into to detail a few other improvements (more on the drivetrain momentarily), but what’s interesting to me is what the seller lists as potential trade bait for this truck: several varieties of other Chevy truck models or a Porsche 911 Turbo. That’s quite a swing!

Under the hood is where plenty of money has been spent as well, with the seller explaining that the engine is a blueprinted crate 350 engine featuring aluminum heads, a roller cam, Holley 650 carburetor, Hooker competition long tube headers, a brand new dual exhaust with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, and much more. The transmission is a rebuilt Turbo 350, and aside from the air conditioning needing to be hooked up (it supposedly worked before the engine was replaced), this is about as turnkey as it gets. The lowering kit is a matter of taste, but given there’s very little else that looks like a slammed K5 Jimmy/Blazer on the road, I would likely keep it as-is. Would you go back to stock or keep the modified appearance?

Slammed really doesn’t describe this Jimmy.. It’s not lowered that much from stock. If it had the 4 wheel drive setup it would be even higher than stock. Right now it handles a lot better than the stock height and the ground clearance is higher than most 2 wheel drive cars and trucks on the road today. This is a very nice truck as it sits and i wouldn’t do anything to change it. Pay the man and hit the road.

How do you know it handled better??

You lower the center of gravity and it will reduce body roll. Yes it will handle better.

Cadmanis hit it. Racecars don’t sit on the ground for nothing.

This is a nice rig, and it’s not lowered to the point of barely being driveable. I’ve seen them lowered so much that the ground clearance was measured with a feeler gauge not a ruler, and they’d high-side on a speed bump.. I think the seller is dreaming about the price, however. I wouldn’t mind owning it but not for that price.

A lot of cash for nothing in my opinion, not 4×4, can not stand lowering, looks horrible.

I like it and its been tasteful lowered I’m not a Chevrolet fan because all the ones I have had have been a maintenance nightmare but this is one I would own. I just can’t afford to drop that kind of coin a a rig that’s 9 years younger than me

Testing,,you know, when these came out, I thought, what kind of doofus would buy a K5 NON-4×4? Goes agin everything we held dear, in trucks anyway. As an old man yelling at clouds now, I can see how this could have fit the bill for many not in a winter climate. Fact is, I’m surprised there weren’t more sold. Looks ridiculous, like sacked out springs.

No I would like it original production is worth more and I just don’t understand why anyone would lower a truck I have one original and one modified the modifications my dad did for lights and running boards and outher accessories and I have an old GMC Caballero all original that I show no suspension mods

I love it, aside from the suspension drop. I’d have spent that lowering kit money on fixing the AC, but to each their own. I think a lower stance looks great on some vehicles, but it’s not for me on a K5 for some reason. Still, it’s a really nice vehicle and it probably wouldn’t be a huge deal to put it back to stock ride height if that’s what you wanted to do.

The sad part is that this trend won’t stop until gasoline is no longer available.

I don’t care for the interior, I’d change that. I’d put wider wheels and tires on it, maybe truck rally’s. Then fix the AC and cruise it,

It’s states lowering shackles ,I assume that means shorter shackles that that limit leaf spring operation, results horrible ride.

Just because COG is lowered doesn’t necessarily make it handle better.

This might be a fun daily if it doesn’t ride like a hobby horse. Full size and easy to crawl in and out of. Might have to use a little fenise to keep from boiling the tires. Southern ride for sure.

Outstanding! Perfect ride height. I don’t exactly hate the stock wheel set up it might benefit from a taller tire or a 16″ wheel. The plaid interior is fantastic as well.

    Very cool.

AC “just needs to be hooked up”. Then hook it up!!🙄

Yeah Johan, it’s always that or my favorite, it just needs to be charged. Well then, charge the damn thing! At the asking price of this Jimmy, everything should be functioning one hundred percent.

Yup, also see “easy fix” in ads, which probably means the seller tried and couldn’t fix it…

Looks like it’s running on four temporary spares. It would look a whole lot better with wheels and tires that do a better job of filling the wheelwells.

Just south if $40k seems high but is likely reasonable if it’s as clean as it appears. 2WD blazers/jimmies will always be hot and cool with the hot rodder scene. To the Off-roader crowd: Please look elsewhere for what you like. But I agree with others that a better tire selection is in order. IMO this looks great with a little bit of lowering and I’d love to have it!

How did the 80 sell for $14.5k 2 days ago yet this one is at $39k?
The 80 was 4wd and running stock suspension.
The belly dragging fad is spreading. Whatever!

While I get the appeal of 2wd pickups, I never understood the appeal of 2wd Jimmys or Blazers, except maybe their use as security guard vehicles. That low stance looks cool on a Sierra, strange on a Jimmy. Nice and solid but I’ll pass because of the lack of 4wd.

Nope, nope, nope. WHY? Dad bought a 75 Scottsdale suburban brand new 2wd. Towing a tandem axle travel trailer on vacation, 5 kids, Irish setter, luggage, etc., it didn’t look like this. And 40k? C’mon….

A 2wd squarebody drives much, much better on the street than the 4×4 and the production # for 2wd K5s is miniscule compared to the 4×4. So for street only duty the 2wd makes much more sense IMO, no T-case, front diff, u-joints and associated weight to worry about. Not so sure I appreciate its stance with so tiny tires however it’s a nice find just not so fond of the price

    Oh that colour…..🤮
But, to be fair, I never did care for 2WD blazers, they always looked ridiculously out of proportion to me. Lower it and leave stock steelies on it? Well that just makes it look even sillier. But, that’s only my opinion, and the sea is full of them.

I have an ’81 2 WD which is ready for conversion. I’ll be watching what price this sells at so I will know the sell point for mine.

I drove an 81 2WD Blazer for 20 years, and the last 10 it was lowered 3/4 (the most I could get with drop spindles, springs and without notching the rear frame). The best truck I’ve ever owned, and I’ve always had a truck of some sort, pickups, Suburbans, Wagoneers, for pulling trailers filled with LBC’s. Mine had a large brush guard, in primer with dark tinted windows and steelies with dog dish caps and WIIIDE tires. Urban Camouflage! I had a 4WD shop do some engine work for me, and the shop owner went on a minor rant about “why did you do that, I’d make it a tall 4WD,,,”. Then, he drove it, and told me he suddenly understood. What was it Willie said “He’s not wrong, he’s just different”. If your personal taste is for tall 4WD Blazer’s like you see in most every rural driveway, by all means go get yourself one. But if you don’t have enough imagination to understand a completely different take, the least you can do is kwitchourbellyachin.
    Have fun

Well, like others have said, I’m not a fan of the lowering of Blazers but apparently some people are.

I’m ok w/ the replacement seat fabric. I’m ok w/ the carpet color. I’m not really loving those two together… kinda “black pants w/ brown shoes” to me but that’s subjective.

I’m also not a fan of the “Buy it Now” price either but to each his or her own. :) I see people can make offers, which is good.

If the seller maintains that all the A/C needs is a charge and a belt, then that should be done now, IMO.

The market should determine the vehicle’s value… generally speaking, nothing is really worth more than it can be sold for.
