Texas Barn Find: 1967 Buick Special

Offered on and off between 1936 and 1996, the Special was typically Buick’s lowest-priced model. The car is noted for introducing in the 1960s the modern Buick V6 engine that became a core motor at GM for several decades. This 1967 Special was stored in a barn in Texas for many years and currently calls Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania home. While it doesn’t look pretty, the car is said to run and drive well with practically no rust. It’s available here on eBay for $7,495 or you can tender an offer.

Between 1964-69, the Special was the entry-level intermediate for Buick. After a styling refresh in 1966, the cars were similar the next year when 32,718 copies of the Special were built. Another 53,323 buyers opted for the little snappier Special Deluxe. Regarding Special 2-door sedans like this one, two model numbers were issued, one for the V6 and one for the V8. The seller identifies this car as a 43307 which would have come from the factory with a 225 cubic inch V6. 43407 would have been the V8. So, if that’s correct, the original engine in the seller’s car has been swapped at some point for a 300/2-barrel of a similar vintage.

After being exiled for a few years, this ’67 Buick is in running condition today thanks to some work. It has been treated to a new alternator, voltage regulator, some brake work, new shocks, fluids change, and presumably a tune-up. Two of the tires have been changed, but why not all four after all this time? We’re told the odometer reading is 36,000 and there is speculation that the number is accurate, but there are no guarantees.

While you could clear coat the existing finish and run with it the way it sits, you could also consider a new paint job. The seller says that rust is at a minimum here, largely the surface variety and the undercarriage and floorboards are quite clean. The windshield is cracked, so that will have to be replaced, and – from the limited photos – the interior appears to have survived well. The seller offers a video of the car running so you should take a peek. While cash is king, the seller would consider a trade for a GTO of equal value.

GTO of equal value? More like what’s left of a GTO.

Hi Ken, Buick used the v6 until 1967 when they sold the tooling to Jeep. Jeep did source that engine from Buick prior to that. They also started sourcing the Buick 350 from 1968 to 71 for the Wagoneers.

Ken, I bought a 67 43307 Buick Special, brand new with the 225 c.i. V6, traded it in in 1971 for another car. I put 88,000 miles on it and it still ran great. It was the same color and model.
