The Last Testarossa: 1996 Ferrari F512M

We often forget that the classic Ferrari Testarossa was, in many ways, a mass produced Ferrari if there ever was one. When Testarossa production ended, almost 10,000 cars had been produced. With its long lifespan relative to other Ferrari models, it spawned a few different versions of the classic 1980s flat-12 coupe, and this 1996 Ferrari 512M listed here on craigslist is effectively the last of a breed: the end of the line for the Testarossa, and the last flat-12 Ferrari model sold. The asking price is $525,000 and it’s located near Denver, Colorado.

The 512M was the swan song for the Testarossa, and represented an interesting bridge between the Ferrari of old and the next generation of Ferrari design. Front and rear, the Testarossa was softened just a bit over the fairly rigid lines of the 1980s model. The taillights, now no longer hidden behind slats on the back panel, were a sign of things to come on models like the Ferrari 430. The front end featured a much more modern headlight design, with a smoked housing and a projector-style lens. New wheels and a revised front bumper finished off the 1990s facelift for the venerable Testarossa, and since it represented the end of an era, it became an instant collectible among Ferrari faithful.

The interior was still very much a Testarossa inside, with its familiar orange-on-black gauges and the classic gated shifter. Like the outside, some effort was made to freshen up the cockpit for the final fling of the Testarossa, but the changes were minor. According to Petrolicious, the updates included “….a new aluminum pedal design, a more functional steering wheel, a contemporary air-conditioning system, and an option to spec lightweight composite bucket seats,” which this example does not have. Otherwise, most of the significant changes happened in the second-to-last version of the Testarossa, the 512TR.

The sonorous flat-12 was good for 434 horsepower and it could reach 60 miles per hour in under 5 seconds. Of course, like so many other supercars from this era, this was still very much an analog design, and the driver wan an active participant in the driving experience. The seller notes that this 512M benefits from lots of expensive, must-do maintenance, including a recent engine out servicing that’s documented in an included binder. The 512M is a must-have for any Ferrari collector, and is a car that rarely comes up for sale. Would you buy this version of the classic Testarossa, or the original 1980s model?

Current owner is obviously frugal when it comes to advertising cost. Makes you wonder how frugal the maintenance was that should have been done on this half a million dollar ride.

A good indicator is the quality of tires put on it. A set of Kumho Sports (if such a model exists) would be a tip off, lol
