Thinning the Herd: 1965 Pontiac GTO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

After a surprisingly popular launch in 1964, the GTO returned in 1965 with stacked headlights like the full-size cars offered by Pontiac. Muscle car mania was now “fully on” and GTO sales more than doubled from 32,000 to 75,000 units in ’65 (and would nearly hit 100k the following year). The seller is downsizing his/her collection, and this nice example has been garage-trapped for a couple of years. Located in Kearneysville, West Virginia, this Poncho is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $27,500, but the seller might take something slightly less. Thanks for digging into the Pontiac vault for another interesting tip, T.J.!

The 389 cubic inch V8 continued as the only choice for the GTO in 1965, though you could order it with either a 4-barrel carburetor or the “Tri-Power” set-up with triple deuces. The car was 100 lbs. heavier this year, thanks mostly to three inches of sheet metal being added to the front clip. Perhaps that was offset by an extra five horsepower, now 335 hp at 5,000 rpm with the 4-barrel. The seller’s car came this way, and the seller has a Tri-Power arrangement that he/she never got around to installing.

We’re not given a history lesson on this GTO and it’s one of many cars that the seller may be considering parting with. The mileage is unknown, with a 99,999-mile placeholder used instead. The machine does run and drive, but all it’s done is migrate to different spots in and out of the garage. The photos provided are not great and the seller was planning on more, but inclement weather came along about the time the Pontiac was put up for sale. Offers will be considered, but don’t low-ball the guy!

Sold, and not surprising if it’s every bit as good as it looks.

Some of the “barn finds” are sold before the vehicle is featured.
      Why put it up?

The car hadn’t sold when this feature was posted. Good deals don’t last.

Personally, even if its sold I still like looking at the car here on Barnfinds. But I think this must’ve been a great deal and a great Goat to be gone after it was posted on here. Hope it is going to a good home.

“this, but that… and this… but that…” does not engender good sales relations. Much of which depend on the straight forwardness this seller has NOT engendered. Those who call us, then reveal a (Carlos Castenades?) separate reality have blown it for me.

Lub dez ‘pre muscle’ (I quibble Russ) in early ‘60s (esp Thunderbolt) 3, 4 yr 1st gen. (chevelle also ’64, but ugly 2 me, 442?, by the stang? now it’s ‘muscle’ car) the GTO is f i n e ! Rapidly they degenerate w/‘face lift’ and 2nd gen, to me, after that.
Others?:Shape shift w/hood bumps (not so bad in the rear/shoulder)… improve w/FB (but doing so when loosing the nice straighter early lines we got after the late 50s bulgem0biles (tri5, etc).
Any car can B made ‘faster’ whether straight line or the curvies so vibe, look, style, industrial art(s) is where it all is…
