Thirty Years Stored: 1979 Chevrolet G10 Short Van

Need a van for work or fun? You won’t go driving off too quickly in this project 1979 Chevy G10 Shorty, but at the asking price, it might be worth a whirl. This G10 is offered for $5,000 here on craigslist, located in Berlin, Connecticut. Thanks to Pat L. for the tip! Chevrolet started making the first of these vans in 1964 and didn’t stop until the mid-1990’s. Two versions – the G20 and the G10 – were offered. The G10 was the lighter-duty option. Supplied with a variety of engines, they proved infinitely versatile. Today, the 1960s and 1970s Chevy vans have achieved vintage status, with several sites profiling owners’ personal configurations for camping, as a rolling office, a musician’s studio, or just looking cool.

Our seller doesn’t give us many photos, and scant description. The van has been stored for thirty years. The mileage stands at 120,000 and the van does run. It is a 6-cylinder, probably the 250 ci base motor. We are told it comes with a three-speed manual column shift, and that it needs a new clutch. No photos of the engine bay are supplied. The bumpers and grille are exceptionally straight. The van has original paint in dark blue, looking dusty but serviceable.

It retains its original carpets and captain’s chairs upholstered in what looks like dark red velour. Notably, the headliner appears to be shag carpet – Austin Powers would be right at home! The van has apparently been used for storage.

The tires are flat, so a call to find out whether you’ll need to bring spares is a must. The wheels look to be vintage aftermarket five-spoke mags. It has clean, straight panels with no windows, offering a palette for the enterprising customizer.  The owner indicates there is rust, but we’re not told where. The Head, tail, and all marker lights look to be in good shape. The seller claims a clean title. What about it, would this Shorty be welcome in your garage?

I have always thought these shorty vans were so cool and glad to see them getting the recognition they deserve many years later. Looks like the perfect environment for it to have been stored as I doubt there would be any rodent damage to be concerned with. It’s amazing sometimes how tires even as flat as these will still pump up and hold enough air for transporting purposes. Nice write up Michelle.

Carpet & captain’s chairs are original, but not the wheels?

This van did not roll out of the factory in 1979 with those captains chairs in it, no matter what the seller says.

Ah, the stories the interior of that van could tell…..

      Do you mean:

Like a picture she was layin’ there
      Moonlight dancin’ off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She’s gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that’s all right with me
