Could you make one Beetle out of these three projects? Or is it best to simply keep the $1,200 in your pocket and find a better example? That’s the question in front of you if this three-for-one deal up in Maine is tempting. Unlike most forlorn Beetle projects, all of these cars have engines but they also have a fair amount of rust. Check out the collection here on craigslist in Maine, and thanks to Barn Finds reader Bill Walters for the find.
Each Beetle does have something to offer (in addition to the rust.) This blue Bug is said to be a Super Beetle, and has some decent period wheels and a wicked roof rack. In my opinion, I’d simply use this car for its accessories and maybe the motor if it has a healthy drivetrain. The seller says it’s been sitting for many years and he can’t get the hood open.
The red 1969 model looks like the one worth investing in, as it has a complete interior and looks to have stayed fairly dry inside. The seller says it’s been sitting since 1980 but is a one-owner car with an engine that still turns freely by hand. Hard to tell if it’s a rust bucket but what we can see looks promising.
The Beetle in the middle that looks like the biggest project has its fenders inside the cabin and a motor out back that still turns by hand. You could likely make a decent runner out of the three, but I’m curious why the red ’69 wouldn’t count as a project in and of itself. If you need three to make one, there’s got to be a reason for it – should we assume the red car is rusty underneath?
The problem here is that there are a number of Super Beetles available in good condition for $5,000-$9,000- less than what it would likely take to get these into that condition. The ‘69 is most valuable car here, but has limited parts swappability with the other two.
The one o’clock shows a corvair engine
I have had three early seventies beetles and they have all had the generator/ alternator at one o’clock position and all of them had matching numbers sorry a corvair six would not fit
Nothing special at all. Three clapped out bugs. Available like these most places for about the same price.
pic 21 is definitely a Corvair engine, but I seriously doubt it is in any of these cars. It’s like the guy just threw in a spare picture.
Wheels are nothing special. Just crappy EMPI 8 spoke style wheels. Have no idea why the guy thinks they are “spider 10 wheels”.
no mention of the Corvair engine pictured?
I would make a nice one out of 2 of them then possibly a BaHa out of the remaining parts!
