It looks like lightning has struck twice, as we have yet another Bradley-built GT that appears about a thousand times better than any of the hack-jobs built by DIYers. We just featured a late-production example that seems similar to this car in that it was manufactured by the Bradley factory and accordingly retains a title indicating it as such. I actually dig this early example even more, and you can find here on craigslist for just $5K. Be sure to go here if the ad is archived.
Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rocco B. for the find. The Bradley is a bit different from the later car in that it doesn’t have gullwing doors – in fact, it doesn’t have doors at all. The T-top roof is removed in this picture, giving the Bradley even more of a look and feel of a slot car than an actual road-going vehicle. The paint still looks quite lustrous and bright, although the tires appear to have lost their whitewalls. I dig the huge fender-mounted mirrors, too.
The interior is holding up well, but it looks far from comfortable. The tight quarters will challenge you if you’ve got a few extra pounds or even just long legs; clearly, the R&D team at Bradley was limited to a few skinny guys to assess just how cramped they could make the cockpit. Still, what we can see looks good, with decent leather seating surfaces, a clean dashboard and carpets, and an ugly-if-not-period-correct steering wheel.
The seller is quick to point out in photos that the flip-down headlight doors still work, and the Corvette-inspired lighting is still on-board. The Bradley is said to have just 9,000 miles and relies on a 1.6L Beetle mill for thrust. While not powerful, the seller does say that it “…runs perfect,” and based on the overall condition in the photos, we have little reason to doubt the claim. For $5K, this seems like a lot of weird fun for the money, but if you want gullwing doors, keep looking.
I have liked these since I was a kid and they were new. Every time I see one they remind me of riding around in my friend’s dune buggy. As much fun and better looking. I consider buying one and then it strikes me, why would I buy this instead of a miata? I have used this same miata test while looking at an MGB and a number of other two seaters.
This one looks much better put together than many Bradleys I have seen.
Always liked these.
Actually, IIRC,the early ones had shaped plexiglass gull-wings, note the hinges on the center bar. Frames came later.
Unobtanium years ago, maybe the “net” could help now!
I do not see a needle on the speedo, must of twisted it off!
Their ads said VW or Ford, but I have never seen one with Ford engine/drivetrain. Did any of those ever get built. I would have gone Ford, I’m guessing Pinto drivetrain just because I’ve never ever liked V/W beetles.
