Topless Time Capsule: 1978 VW Super Beetle Convertible

If you’ve been waiting for a clean project car with classic charm and a solid foundation, this 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible might be it. According to the seller, this final-year Super Beetle is a rare rust-free example with a strong-running engine, new brakes, and fresh tires. While the body shows surface wear and could use a repaint, the bones appear remarkably solid. Even better, it comes with an assortment of extra parts, including a spare convertible top frame, doors, fenders, trunk lids, and a back glass soft-top window. This promising project is currently listed for sale here on craigslist in Portland, Oregon. Thanks for the tip Zappenduster!

The photos reveal a car in full “patina” mode, wearing a weathered coat that could be mistaken for deep rust at first glance. But the seller emphasizes that it’s rust-free, which likely refers to the structure, floor pans, frame rails, and body panels, all appearing free of rot. That’s a big deal for any convertible, especially a vintage VW, and it makes this car a much more appealing starting point for restoration or preservation.

Mechanically, this Bug has some fresh updates that should make it easy to enjoy while you work on aesthetics. New brakes and tires are already in place, and the engine is said to run “excellent,” which is a good sign that the 1600cc air-cooled flat-four and its fuel injection system are in working order. The seller doesn’t list mileage, but given the car’s 45-year history, it’s safe to say it’s been around the block, and possibly well cared for along the way.

The inclusion of major extra parts is another highlight here. Spare fenders, doors, a convertible top frame, and even a rear glass window from a soft top are items that can be hard to find, or costly to replace. These bonus items add flexibility for a builder who may want to restore or customize without hunting for hard-to-source components.

While the paint is faded and flash rust is visible, the structure appears solid, and the glass is reportedly crack-free, including the windshield. This Beetle looks like a car you could either rat-rod and drive as-is or strip down for a proper respray. Would you leave it weathered or give this Super Beetle a full makeover?

Not a lot of value here, looking at the ad there is allot of rust and rot on this vehicle, the seller is a bit optimistic on the stated condition, this car is probably “done”, good day all.

For the money and potential value (IMHO) this could be a great project. Sure, some surface “rust” but vehicles in the NW do not “acquire” the seriously terrible rust like they tend to in the “east of the rockies” rust states. Hmmm. ;-)

Surface rust, you should really look at the ad more closely, good day.

Looks like a,fun project. I like the wheels on this car. I could “almost” be persuaded to take this one on.

The only real challenge I see is the rear roll/lip that anchors the convertible top being rusted through in some spots and is probably weak throughout. Given the spare parts & overall condition, I’m wondering if this was a bridge too far for the current owner.

I’d cut the whole thing off and weld in a new one…although finding that section either NOS or intact in an Arizona salvage yard might be tough.

Worth the effort if the rest of it is as solid as represented, and the price is right. Good luck, someone’s going to build a great car out of it.
