Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport in 1961 as a limited production performance car with loads of horsepower. For the next year, they elected to go with sporty good looks with a lesser emphasis on what was under the hood. As a result, sales went from 453 cars to an astonishing 99,311 units. That should include this likely long-stored ’62 SS sport coupe that is going to require an A-Z restoration. Located inside a tractor-trailer, this Chevy is located in Golden, Colorado, and available here on craigslist for $15,000. Our thanks to Gunter Kramer for this discovery.
The SS wouldn’t become its own series until 1964. So, the best way to determine if a ’62 Impala had that option was the trim code on the cowl tag. In the case of the seller’s car that’s 875 which indicates vinyl buckets seats with a red interior, the seating configuration was assigned to just the Super Sports. This Impala is currently stored in a trailer where the ceiling is starting to come down around the vehicle. We don’t know if it’s been in there for years or just to transport it recently. The seller says the car will be unloaded next week and more photos taken at that time.
What we know is the red paint is extremely faded and the material within the matching interior is turning to dust. If there is any rust, we can’t see it, but two headlights and their bezels are missing. The car is likely a one-owner machine as we’re told the open title will bear the original purchaser’s name. The car was powered by a 327 V8 with an automatic transmission, likely a Powerglide. The Chevy was equipped with factory air conditioning, a somewhat rare commodity in the early 1960s. The mileage is said to be 38,000, but that could just as easily be 138,000.
This car is going to require extensive and expensive restoration, so the asking price may end up being the smallest part of the overall investment. The seller mentions he might consider a motorcycle as partial trade, identifying desirable bikes as 750 CB Honda’s or 1973-75 Z1 Kawasaki’s.
High optioned car PS-PB-A/C- Auto and with broken out tinted side windows. Sadly left to rot and get the windows broke out – rust in floors so it willbe a labor of love to rebuild.
Impala !
You forgot to mention “Low rider”
It has to many 1’s in the price, not worth $15k running and driving
409 with a 4 speed…maybe. 327 Powerglide…I don’t think so.
Guy says he decided to keep it .
Another Fred Sanford car looking for Jay Lenno’s money. Meanwhile, Richard Rawlings shows up and asks, “So how much do you want for this $2500 car?” They settle on $6500 and the car ends up in Sweden for reasons nobody understands and everybody is happy. Just shoot me.
