Tri-Power 427 Project: 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L71

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

1968 was a prime time to pay a visit to your Chevrolet dealer, as not only was America’s sports car still offering several great engine options, but the two-seater also got a redesign with a completely new body.  Unfortunately, time and neglect have not treated this ’68 Corvette here on eBay kindly, and upon first glance, it would be pretty easy to write this one off as a hard pass.  However, this one has a strong pedigree, and I hope someone with the skills, patience, and financial resources will invest the time needed to get this once mighty 435 HP monster functioning again.  This first-year C3 is in Raymore, Missouri, with the opening bid of $1,900 yet to be placed.  There’s also no reserve, so the high roller will be bringing this one home on a trailer.  Curvette, thank you for the tip here!

The seller says the ‘Vette he’s offering is a factory 435-horsepower example, which indicates it came with a 427, corporately known as the L71.  This big block variant featured a trio of Holley 2-barrel carbs on top, with another positive being that this one was also originally equipped with a 4-speed.  The good news halts here, as both components are long gone, and the bay looks like it’s been empty for quite some time.  There’s no word on what happened, so it’s a mystery whether the engine failed or if the pair is still operating in another vehicle.

The fiberglass isn’t looking too good, with a significant amount of wear and tear just about all over.  International Blue is said to be the born-with color here, but you’d never know it from viewing the outside now, although a few remnants of that hue can be spotted inside the door jambs.  Speaking of doors, I’m not sure what could have caused this destruction to the driver’s unit, but a ray of hope is that two additional undamaged Corvette doors will be included in the sale.

There’s not a lot presently promising regarding the inside either, with much of the interior needing some sort of attention, repair, or replacement.  This one’s certainly not a project for the novice, but if the factory performance specs check out, maybe somebody with a substantial amount of Corvette restoration experience will see fit to bring this one back to life.  Are you seeing much potential here?

This car is done, no value here. That’s not a L71 tach with the low yellow/red lines. Good day all.

Answering the question of what happened is easy to answer. Quite simply at one time the OE drivetrain was worth more than the car. It might be the same way today.

Today does it matter which one of the 427 CID engines (L36, L68, L88, L71) this car rolled of the line with, when that engine is long gone? I have no idea but I can’t look at a used car as an investment because numbers matching isn’t important to me.

If they get it for $1800 maybe someone could salvage it with a lot of sweat and cash.
I think $1,000 would have been my limit.

Based upon the Tachometer redline NOT a 435 HP Tri-power car.

    Could be a 400 HP Tri-Power car OR 390 HP 427 car.

There was never a 2 4 bbl option from the factory it was a 3×2
    But this car had neither

WHOA! Restoring this Vette would take big bucks! The paint alone would be in the neighborhood of $15K or more! Run from this car ASAP!!!

Assuming Missouri was a title state in 1968, I wouldn’t consider buying this car for any amount. Nothing is worth spending money to buy something you can’t legally own.
