Tribute or Real Deal? 1969 Dodge Charger R/T

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1969 Charger may be a tribute as the VIN does not decode as an R/T. References to it being an R/T appears in the listing and it has R/T lettering in the wraparound rear stripe and elsewhere. For sure this is a beautiful black-on-black Charger that has probably been painstakingly restored. Yet the seller provides zero information on the background of the vehicle. It’s for sale in Irving, Texas where the bidding has been quite brisk here on eBay at $55,877.77 (no reserve outstanding).

When the Charger was introduced in 1966-67, it got off to a slow sales start. It wasn’t until Chrysler’s redesign of the B-body intermediates in 1968-70 that sales took off. And when they did, they exploded. A record 92,590 Chargers were produced in 1968 (up from 17,588 the year before) and Dodge would build another 85,580 in 1969. Of those, 18,766 would be the popular R/T and all of them except 432 copies were equipped with a 440 engine (the 426 Hemi going in the others). The R/T was the most luxurious of the Chargers.

The first five numbers in the VIN tell the story of this car. “XS” would be the code for the Charger R/T, but this one has the base Charger code of “XP.”  The “29” jives because it’s a 2-door hardtop and that’s how all Chargers were built. But the engine code should be “K” if the 440 cubic-inch V8 came from the factory, but instead, it reads “G” was stands for the lesser (but still potent) 383 V8. So, we conclude this is a tribute car. and we hope that all of the interested buyers know this to take into consideration.

It’s a beautiful Charger that would benefit from photos taken in better daylight given the darkness of the paint. We assume everything is up to snuff with the body and finish and we see no big issues. The interior looks nice enough for you to eat off the upholstery, nice and tidy. And the engine compartment is neat and clean and we’re wondering if there’s an aftermarket intake manifold under the carburetor. Other than telling us the car has 90,000 miles, no other details are provided. But the wheels are a nice touch!

Must have been a scam since the listing has completely disappeared.
Either that or the link is incorrect.

    No R/T s are not a ” K” for 440 magnum….they’re “L” code 375 hp wedges

Tribute =fake (putting R/T decals on the car doesn’t make it authentic)just as patina =rust. Nevertheless, one of the better Mopars of this type. If I was going to get any Mopars of this period it would be a ’68 or ’69. It’s already gone.

Who cares if it isn’t a legit R/T? Considering the piles of garbage Chargers usually for sale on this site, this is one you can drive and enjoy. Isn’t that why we buy cars in the first place?

Pretty sure it was a scam I live in Irving and there is literally nothing in the surrounding area that looks remotely like the background . We have no mountains here.

The “SE” was the most “luxurious”

The cheesy aftermarket shifter was a giveaway. Anyone restoring a real R/T would invest in the correct factory shifter. Unless of course they were trying to pass off a fake and make some money…

That is one of the best looking Chargers I have seen. It just looks good all around as it sits.
